A large complex full of various sporting and gym equipment, courts for various sports, and a spa section for self-care. There was even a golf course and a giant hover-coaster! Seriously, this room was huge. Plenty of automatons in uniform, too. One approached, joints squeaking and squelching as it walked, gunked up with cheese. It had a name tag that says 'chiropractor-bot. "Would you try our Health And Wellness Package?" Then it lunged toward Essen!

Beraal had volunteered for this. In theory, that had felt like a great decision. They’d been looking for something with a little more edge—something that didn’t involve spreadsheets, computer code, or pretending they weren’t still figuring out who they were.So when the call came through for an away team, they stepped forward. Eager. Focused. Curious. Then they stepped into the gym. And everything else stopped.Through the protective visor of their suit, all they could see was cheese. Not metaphorical cheese. Not holodeck-program cheese. Literal, melted, horrifyingly viscous cheese For a moment, Beraal just stared. No words. No thoughts. Just the quiet hum of the suit and the absolute certainty that they were never going to hear the end of this from anyone. Then their training kicked in. They brought the phaser up. Adjusted their stance. Focused. “Alright,” they muttered to themselves, voice tinny in the helmet. “We can hit this!"

However, its hovering abilities started up again and it flew toward Rehszan, apparently still angry at him for being too tall. It would collide with him unless he or someone else did something about it. Meanwhile, there were still lawnmowers milling around, although at some point a few of them had been killed offscreen and a few others had simply keeled over from cheese-corruption, lying there like abandoned frisbees. The coaster lost its hovering abilities, hitting the floor and then flipping over and over again. What was this, nascar? It survived all that damage, though, and swerved toward Rehszan again, until Lente shot it and it just Stopped. No dramatic rolling. It just froze mid-air. Several large orange pieces of goop fell from it, writhing until they lay still. One particular lawn-roomba, one of the few remaining, saw this and approached Saren. "Greetings, customer. Would you like a haircut?" Then it tried to shave Saren's hair clean off! And probably the rest of him. Luckily, Allan's shot saved Saren from a terrible barber job. The rest of the roombas could be quickly dispatched at this point without rolls, as they were all much slower. A few robots attempted to crawl over, one even grabbing Lente's leg, but it was easy to shake off and shoot. The damage was similar; the cheese had partially become the robots while also damaging them at the same time. If the latter point wasn't true, the relationship could have been a little more symbiotic, but alas. The corruption seemed to be causing a glitch that not just removed and somehow inverted the Ferengi version of Aasimov's first law, but also set random things like the 100th customer or people who were too tall to ride as hostile, which meant the robots would perceive them as a threat despite all logic telling them otherwise. It's possible you could fix this code, but you'd have to do it to every robot in here individually. Also, there was a connection to a central AI called Brien that had become disrupted somehow.

Lt. JG. Essen | TAC BOT 11-Apr-25 05:03 PM

"Yeah, yeah, I'm doing pretty well, actually, this fucker didn't crack the helmet with the ball, so, we're all clear there - you?" He'd assumed as much, given that the lawnmower hadn't been able to touch the man, but he figured it was good to ask anyways before he talked to the group as a whole about what he was finding on the scans. "So, the cheese is doing the same thing as the circuits, melting into the bots and also eroding them, but.. in the code, it's like.." he looked at it more closely, scrolling through his tricorder and reading it, "it's glitching them out, somehow? Started setting them to detect certain random people as threats, and it's.. there's some connection to a central AI, too. Named.." he snorted a little when he read the name, "Brien, apparently."

Avatar
Lt. JG. Paco Umali | SCI BOT 11-Apr-25 05:26 PM

Lt. Allan Allen | ENG BOT 11-Apr-25 05:26 PM
"Well, the code seems to be, like, pretty random in its selections? Like, it chose people too tall to ride specifically, random numbers of customers.. I don't think it's us, in particular.. Lente could think of several ways in which a fungus could corrupt code, extrapolating from what she knew about bioneural relays and also fungi. Especially with an AI behind it that made use of the mycelial ability to relay information. She didn't know how to achieve that, but she could imagine that it was possible. "Survival instincts probably, then? Not necessarily malicious, it's not that weird to think it might just be instinctual." A weird mesh between advanced technological aptitude and very primitive primal emotion. Lente was getting a headache.

After all, the first thing that an organism wants to do, is survive. Hostility is a viable strategy. Then again, we can't be so sure as of yet.
