Star Trek: Starbase 777

Down (or up, depending on where you were) in Med Bay, Quinn was hard at work... Organising a shelf. Their shift had been quite calm so far, so what better time to make sure the stock was up to date than right now.

Iviaan was tending quietly to his tools, double checking to make sure everything was in its proper place. "Lovely day, isn't it?" The statement would be cheerful if not for the dull monotone of the text-to-speech function.

Aria was cheerily busying herself. She’d done some intake forms here and there, and now, what was a nurse to do! She’d since lined up her highlighters in a rainbow, very attentively lining them up and making sure they were where they all needed to be when not being used. She liked the green ones the best, “Affirmative! I am enjoying myself at this current moment in time.” She gave a perky smile.

"It is certainly a day." Quinn responded light-heartedly... Or at least attempting to sound that way. "It would be lovely if I could remember my PADD password, but that's a problem for later."

“Is aid required?” Aria said with a smile, “Perhaps I would be able to help! I am not doing anything at this current moment in time outside of ensuring that my highlighters are lined up, which I believe is mostly busywork,” She shrugged, “Have you used all available attempts at guessing your passcode?”

"No, I don't think so. If all fails I can just press the 'forgot password' button. But thank you." Quinn responded plainly but honestly, only to hear the comms, and then the Yellow Alert and pathogen procedures being activated. Knowing what it entailed, they glanced over at the consultant in the room for confirmation.

"Oh my. Alright, masks up, everyone. Gloves on." came the monotone reply, as Iviaan followed his own instructions.

Having been here the whole time, the virologist, who already wore a face mask while in the workplace, got to work putting on whatever other contamination gear they could find. Their heart was beating faster, something inside them pounding at a closed door, unable to break through. They were NOT going to get sick again.

Without so much as a nod, Quinn immediately went over to a storage cupboard and donned a mask and gloves in that order. Why did there have to be a pathogen...

Despite not entirely needing a mask, Aria nevertheless follows procedure, and dons a pair of gloves. Her brain instantly starts running diagnostics, “If reports are coming in across the base, the potential we are facing an airborne illness is high,” She did not say this lightly…

The ensign blinked with confusion as the new announcements rang out, “The potential that we are among the only ones unaffected is…similarly high.”

Iviaan turned his attention to the virologist in the room. "I suspect we should be ready to receive a flood of patients."

The turbolift doors opened just as Ekhesai woke up, yawning and rubbing their eyes. "Oh, hello, bluebirds," she greeted cheerfully.

"Your voice will die and dry or something... right dear?" Mirrim was looking at Ekhesai expectantly.

Turning to see a Cadet and a Lieutenant in a turbolift as staff in the background began isolating pre-existing patients to prevent them catching anything, Quinn looked ahead with a twinge of concern on their half-covered face. Here we go...

"Mmm. Something like that. I'm thirsty. Can I have a juice?" Ekhesai wobbled to her feet.

Aria turned her attention rather quickly to the turbolift, and though her eyes were already swimming around, they widened just a bit more in some panic. She quickly shuffled over. The perks of being an android meant that, hopefully, nothing would affect her systems in the coming outbreak. She went to help Ekhesai to her feet, offering a gloved hand, “Hello, I am Ensign Aria. I am a nurse. I will ensure that you will feel better soon.”

Well, maybe the Medical Bay wasn't the most useful place for an Engineer to be. He walkd in, heard the clearly infected patients blabbering, and walked immediately out to find somewhere to group up with... someone? A superior? He was not sure what an Engineer could do in this situation.

She dropped her comm badge and stepped on it. "My voice is dead... She wants juice, I don't know if she has allergies."

"Oookiedokie," she hummed, letting herself be lead. "Hi, Aria. You look like a ghost. Boo," she said, giggling.

Oh, this is bad, “We will work around all potential allergens,” She helped Ekhesai to her feet, “I am in need of assistance!” She called into the rest of the bay. She slung Ekhesai’s arm over her shoulder to lead her to a biobed, “I have been informed of similar comparisons…if you would lay down?”

Mirrim's eyes widened as Ekhesai was lead away, she turned and ran back out of the medbay, screaming. "They've taken the kid!"

Ekhesai laid down on the bed as instructed. She was still feeling sleepy. Maybe a quick nap would do it...

That’s Ekhesai taken care of, for now! Now to the- THE OTHER ONE! “Ah- Th- Patient! Running!!” Her voice glitched slightly in a panic.

"We need to identify the pathogen. Skin samples, blood samples, anything we can get," Iviaan instructed. Ekhesai's vitals proved that she was currently suffering a slight fever, but no symptoms beyond that and a slight rash on the back of her hand.

Aria turned back to the lieutenant. Right. Yes. Do what you can. Surely security would be able to catch Mirrim? “A-Affirmative.” Her voice glitched again. She swallowed, mostly to calm her nerves, and began to do as instructed.

"Good work, Ensign. Stay calm, you've got this." Just what the hell was going on? How bad were things outside??

“I-It is my first medical emergency.” The android said as she worked, setting her tricorder aside for a moment as she reached for another tool, “The m-most experience I have had with this is a small outbreak of a cold on the M-Mandelbrot,” She paused, “My voice modulator is g-glitching.” She stood still for a moment before getting back to work.

All at once, the lights flickered and died as the temperature began to rise.

Lucky for Aria, she glowed bright blue. It was also very easy to see her eyes flick back and forth to her superior officers, “C-Complication.”

"I think it's likely we're still in the attachment phase. If we isolate everyone infected, we can stop the spread. We also need to find the source. Patient zero. Is it possible we can identify and isolate all recently-arrived persons and cargo?" Vio said, their voice muffled in their hazmat suit. (edited)

“If we are able to c-contact operations or the bridge. The lights and heat may be more p-pressing matters to command,” She replied, setting aside the tool she’d picked up and lifting Ekhesai’s arm to look at the rash on her hand, “Patient is exhibiting skin irritation around her hands,” She turned to Vio, “A potential infection vector?”

"Perhaps. It could indicate the virus is spread through touch, but not definitively. We need tissue samples, particularly from the site. And someone to contact Operations." They could do it themself, but they wanted to focus on their craft (research and diagnosis).

Having been working in the background, collecting data and equipment and generally helping out whoever needed help, they soon turned their attention back to Vio as tthey spoke. "Contact them for what, sorry? I was helping Nurse Charter with a nervous patient."

"To identify and isolate all recently-arrived persons and cargo," Vio repeated.

The young nurse starts to take a tissue sample of Ekhesai’s rash, using her blue lights and the console of the biobed to guide her.

Iviaan, an Aenar, was finding it very, very difficult to concentrate as the temperature rose. That was more hot than he was safely comfortable with. He moved back, feeling a bit woozy.

"Right, yes. I can do that." Quinn responded quickly before tapping their commbadge. "Operations from Med Bay, are you able to identify and isolate all recently-arrived persons and cargo?"

Ekhesai hummed all the while, wiggling her hand from Aria's grasp. "D' you like pigs? I like pigs. Oink." Thank you, Sai.

“I have not seen a pig,” She comments softly as she finishes taking tissue samples. She turned to Vio and Iviaan and then paused, “Lieutenant Ch’rhytross?” Oh no.

Lights back on? Lights back on. And temperature normal.

While she was distracted, Sai wacked at Aria's commbadge to get a quick message through.

“What- Ah!” She set Sai’s tissue sample aside very quickly, “Stop that!”

Okay, fine. Jeez. "Mean. You're no fun."

The android wilted a bit, “M-My apologies,” She commented quickly before handing off the sample to Vio and tapping her own comm badge herself, thank you very much.

The data from Operations arrived, listing all the new arrival and cargo from that day. Nothing to be pulled from it now, but maybe it would come in handy soon...

"Can we— let's get those samples analyzed, shall we?" Recovering from the intense temperature fluctuation, Iviaan was still a little woozy, and working on getting back into the game.

"I'm on it," Vio said, putting the tissue sample under a microscope or into a chemical solution or in front of a computer to have it's composition analysed or whatever it was that virologists do in the future. Perhaps all three?

Analysis of the blood samples revealed small, worm-shaped creatures, which definitely were not supposed to be there.

"Oh, worms." After realising they should probably give further context, they elaborated, "It looks like this is not a virus, so it's possible my scope may be limited. I do have some knowledge of parasites, though, just managing expectations. I'm going to take images of them and search Starfleet medical databases to see if it matches anything on our records." If they already knew what it was, that sure would be convenient, which was why, for the sake of plot, that definitely wasn't going to happen.

Oh. A parasitic infection. That’s…a problem, “I will inform the lieutenant,” She tapped at her comm once more.

Correct, they had no matches in the database. For the plot, of course.

"Are the birds comin'?" Sai squinted through her splitting headache. "The birds aren't gonna eat my worms, are they? I like the worms."

Aria looked to Sai worriedly, making her way back to the biobed to make sure the cadet wouldn’t get worse, “Scientific officers will be aiding in ensuring you will feel better soon, as I had stated previously. It is of no concern.“

The turbolift doors opened, and this time, a disoriented Senang stumbled out, the sleeves of their blouse significantly more unravelled than before, with several small black smears staining the white. Jayselle had disappeared, so they were alone, and they were muttering to themselves about stars and maps and boats. And coffee, somehow?

"Huzzah!" Ekhesai waved to the newcomer. "A new challenger approaches... Dash yourself upon the rocks or be damned..or something."

And after a few moments of being in le scary turbolift that is definitely haunted and most probably filled with vermin and stuff, Paco finally arrived from their trek from the science labs to the medical labs "Hallo..."

“Yes, a n-newcomer.” Aria glitched out once more before administering Sai a hypospray for her headache. She quickly made her way to Senang to help them to a biobed as Paco and others arrive, “Greetings, I am Nurse Aria! Aid would be appreciated!”

Iviaan moved to distribute masks and gloves to the science team. Just to be safe.

"we are here to do the seance, the science, deeeee scientific sceaance of science. Hallo. Yes." Paco said as he took in deep breaths and calmed himself down. "It's science time."

He came into the medbay right after Paco. As soon as his eyes landed on Ekhesai, his face immediately pulled itself into a frown. "We're here to assist. All three of us are healthy, and ready to work."

"Lieutenant, please come up with better intro for us for the next time." Evoras entered behind the other two. "I'm uncertain how much help I will be, but feel free to tell me to hold something."

Senang's symptoms read..about the same as Ekhesai's, including the fever. Other than that, their rash was centered around their palms and fingertips, as well as those same black smudges.

After getting Senang to the biobed, Aria looked at the black smudges with intrigue. She flicked her medical tricorder open to give them a scan. The message from Command made her turn to Vio and Iviaan, “P-Patient zero appears to be cargo.”

"Cargo?" Iviaan perked up. Well, that wasn't quite what they expected, but.. "Very well, let's give it a look when it gets here, then."

"If we have a sample of the parasite worm thing, that could be a great start for us figuring out how to make them go byebye."* Paco said, thinking outloud for a little bit before hearing that a transport thing was going to happen* "Oh that's convenient.." *He said to himself, very nice, the prophet's plans are going as intended. *"Hallo Nurse Aria are you doing alrighty?"

The android flicked her eyes to Paco, “I am o-operating at a negligible level beneath peak efficiency. My voice modulator appears to be having a s-stress induced glitch.”

"Let's get ourselves some protective gear as well first," he urged, because getting infested while trying to find a cure for said infestation would be uncool, cringe even. "And then let's pull up some cures for similar ailments for a reference point as well."

The black smudges looked to be ink of some sort.

"There is no need to panic Ensign. Take a deep breath or whatever you usually do to calm down, we will figure this out somehow. Now where is your protective gear?" Evoras looked around the medbay.

“It is a p-particularly unique situation to serve as my first medical emergency,” She commented to Evoras, before she pointed toward the protective gear storage.

There was massive not pog energy in getting infected while doing the cure making, yes. Anyways, When Paco noticed the black smudges, he gave out a bit of a vulcan eyebrow raise as he brought up his tricorder and confirmed that, yep, it was some sort of ink, but what kind of ink, and where would Senang have been where he would have ink on their hands. Tricorder probably couldnt answer that last one, but it could the others.

Cargo delivered. It was a large box, by the looks of it, and carefully beamed away from anyone else.

"I see. It will be easier the next time. You are doing quite reasonably well." Evoras also got protective gear and looked towards the other people in the room. "What should I do?"

"Very nice. the box is here, and beamed in away from anyone else." Paco said with a smile as he carefully put on his PPE and getting a petri dish before making an approach to the box. "Time to make the scannings happen, and getting some of the wormlings into the dish. so we can find something that do the killings it..." Paco said as he made steps towards the box "Paco sorry for sounding weird, today's been over stimulating..."

"If you could take a look either at the samples we have or the box, that would be great." Iviaan shoved his PADD aside in favor of cracking open that bad boy (the box).

"Okey Dokey. It is the unboxings time. SpaceTok's favorite kind of online video content... uhh... okey how do I open the box?" Paco said as he approached the box and tried to figure out how to open it, get would get it after a little bit.

Inside the box was a series of scripts.

"Safely. With protective equipment. In a quarantine forcefield, in case it unleashes several plagues." Vio backed away from the box.

"We'll help you, don't worry. Like before, we will solve this," he calmly nodded, dressed in his protective clothes. "Now, let's see what we have here..."

"GASP! LITERATURE!" Paco actually said the word gasp when he saw the scripts. "That's why Senang has ink on their hands! And that's probably how things spread.... okey dokey time to get worms, and then probbaly burn the scripts later. probably. maybe. definitely a possibility and a maybe."

The android tilted her head in interest when the scripts were unveiled, “…this is an interesting development t-toward how the parasites spread.”

"Not what I expected," he muttered. "Let's examine the paper and the ink separately? Perhaps there's something in there..."

Evoras looked at the box, then she looked up and raised an eyebrow. "Books? Why would...? How did the parasites get on these?"

"you know the silverfish? those things that get inside old books and eat them? kinda like that, but except they do the doodooo of the inky blackness that got into their hands, and then spread the parasitic infection when touching other people. they do the multiply and spread... like how tribbles keep multiplying and expanding their tribble territorial occupations until all is no more food.... or something like that... maybe it is a poetic methapor for someething..." Paco proposed as he stared into the pile of scripts and scanned them separately. "Question now is where did it come from? how did the ink and paper gets here, who ordered the books, and who made the books happen... or if it a methapor for something else..."

An analysis of the ink on the pages showed.... eggs. Little parasitic eggs, highly reactive to heat, waiting to spring to life like a sleeper agent.

"HOLY SHET THE SILVERFISH LAID EGGS, EGGS THAT HATCH FROM BODY TEMPERATURE AND DRILL INTO THE HOST AND DO THE INFECTION, AN INFECTION THAT MAKES PEOPLE WEIRD!" *Paco announced as he got the readings. *"okay so how do we kill them?"

“We need to d-determine who ordered these. OPS sent us cargo records, affirmative?” Aria began to make her way toward one of the consoles, “That individual is p-patient zero.”

Do the doodooo," *he deadpanned. "I am following you, though. As for the killing method... we need to make a drug that is strong enough to specifically target and then kill these guys and get them out of the organisms of the affected people." (edited)

"It do do the doodoo that do the dooo... the do do dooodooo do...." Paco just wants to go to bed and not be on duty for the day "oh yay, the power of pharmaceutical technological innovation has saved us all once again"

"Lieutenant, yo are making no sense, cease that or I will tell them you're infected as well." Evoras raised her eyebrow at Paco.

"ok." Paco ceased ~~to exist,~~ to continue talking about the scary black silverfish doodoo.

In response to the doodoo-ing, Ekhesai imitated a kazoo melody very badly, as she did not have a kazoo. "Can we get pizza?"

“Negative.” The android replied, now looking through the cargo records for who ordered the scripts, “If the p-parasitic eggs are reactive to heat, perhaps something with low temperatures would have an effect on infection?”

"A strong antibiotic would kill, and the lower temperatures might prevent the spread while we distribute it?" Iviaan offered, piggybacking off of both of them.

"Why not, chuck the boxes in space? Space is cold, because there's no air... actually it would be extremely hot because its a vaccum, but maybe hot enough to instantly kill them. probably. maybe.... I'll stop now." Paco quietly looked outside the window

"Someone could pick them up and then have a whole new infestation of their own, and that is the first problem my brain can come up with right now," Saren argued. "But the idea in itself seems good. We could use the invasive slug method... freeze them, and then dissolve them in acid - if it's strong enough."

“For the infected, we could a-also lower temperature station-wide in much the same way the infected engineer made them r-rise previously,” Aria suggested, “It may also b-be good to keep a sample of the dormant parasitic eggs in the event of a similar outbreak.”

"How about we throw the boxes into the fusion core... or the eventide's warpcore or nacelles, so they could do the insert burning explosion noises here incinerate them, and throw the ash in acid. and chuck the Acidic Ash into space. Cremation ala Starfleet" Paco again proposed. "...are borg probes to cure people open as a treatment option? that sounds cool" (edited)

"We should get to working on the antibiotics regardless, then?" Iviaan was making sure he was keeping up on everything. Beyond that was another problem that needed to be solved, but..

"Nooo, my worms," the Cadet loudly complained, rolling over on the biobed. "Don't anti-worm them.."

"Indeed. Let's cook it up, then," because first they needed to get rid of ones already infesting. The dormant ones, as long as they were left untouched, could be dealt with later. Hearing Ekhesai, he came up closer to her, briefly squatting at a distance to be on the eye-level with her: "Hey, no, don't worry. You'll be fine, I promise. We're getting rid of bad worms only. Wait a bit and then you'll feel better, yes?"

The android hummed as she turned toward the cadet and Saren. Oh…she felt bad. Aria made her way over to the biobed and found another hypospray to help with her infection, holding it outward to Saren, “I-If you would like to help?”

"And then, the bad worms are going to go to a happy bye bye land of happiness, normalcy, fire and acid, where cool space adventures happen." Paco said, very tired and drained from everything that just happened. "I'll go sit down now, i feel light headed."

He turned towards Aria and took the hypospray with a quiet "thank you". "Hey, look there," he pointed to the side, and then pressed the hypo to the side of Ekhesai's neck. "There you go. Now I'll go help out the others."

"Borg probes could work. Actually, there is a substance called Haemoargyros, or Quicksilver blood, made of nanoprobes, that was built for this kind of thing." The person who made it was called Zero of Infinity; they were unaware that Zero themself was actually on this very station, and only knew about Haemoargyros because of its medical applications.

Aria took the hypo back from Saren and set it aside, going to attend to Senang in much the same way she had with Sai during the short-lived blackout, “You are f-familiar with the cadet, affirmative?” She asked Saren, “I apologize.”

Arriving late because the lifts were all overcrowded, Xuan was surprisingly quick manoeuvring through the halls. They were tall and took long strides. When they arrived in med bay they just caught what one of the scientists were saying. A Vorta scientist, not that isn't something one saw every day. "A borg probe based substance? Borg tech is powerful in medical applications, its ability to identify and kill pathogens is unmatched, similar to Elachi spores. Do we have some ready?"

"You don't have to apologize, it's okay," he said as he stood up, moving to the rest of the Science-Medical Team. "I have met her when she just arrived to the station, so... yeah. This sure is a weird first adventure to have in the beginning of your Starfleet career, but not the worst one. How are you holding up, ensign? You're doing a stellar job as a medical officer, in my opinion."

Iviaan perked up at the idea of Borg tech. Very good idea indeed. "That's fantastic. It saves us the trouble of mixing up an anti-parasitic, too..."

Ekhesai mumbled incoherently each time she was addressed, squinting at Team Bluebird. She did not want her worms murdered by Borg tech, thank you.

Aria’s resolute expression softened when Saren asked how she was doing. The nurse continued her scans in the meantime, “I am appreciative of your statement. I am d-designed for this,” She let out a soft huff, “I am…very stressed. I had not considered that I would have this reaction toward an e-emergency,” The nurse set her tricorder aside, “…I am used to m-minor injuries and general care.”

"That is true and," Xuan turned to the cadet who was mumbling. "Do you have any objections?" They asked. Xuan had never seen this cadet before but they had nice spots and.. pointy ears. Was this that one other Trill/Romulan? Now was not the time to ask, but maybe they would after this was over.

"I object!" She complained, slamming her hand on the bed. "I object so bad. Don't .. I want my worms..."

"I don't know if she's in enough of a sound mind to give a coherent answer... This thing, it's been spreading symptoms such as mania," he explained, catching Xuan up to speed.

"Ah, understood," Xuan had considered that upon hearing her reply but their colleagues words confirmed it. They nodded slowly and then looked towards Iviaan. "If we have that Quicksilver blood on hand we could test it."

Busy, busy, busy! Aria was fluttering back and forth between biobeds, a veritable blur of chalk white and glowing blue. They had a cure. They also had an influx of civilians. She was doing her best not to get burnt out, despite definitely already being burnt out. She wasn’t about to show it, though. She was designed for this.

In came Syrax, looking all too similar to a kicked puppy - with his shoulders hunched and his face in a tight frown, he looked around in a futile search for the least busy medical officer around here. "Sorry, I just need a dermal regenerator," he explained, bringing one of his hands closer to his chest - knuckles still busted, and his nose still a bit hurt.

"Here, I've got it." Regenerator in hand, Iviaan crossed the room. "Do you mind if I scan you for anything else?"

"No, it's- it's ok," he nodded, standing still, letting the scan go over him. "Um, by the way, did anyone with a broken nose or something like that come in?.."

The nurse perked upon hearing Syrax’s question, tilting her head, “If there i-is an individual with a broken nose, it is likely that they have been treated and sent on their way due to the current influx. I apologize if you are close to this individual.”

"Oh, no, it's just that-- I got infected too, and I'm afraid I have hurt someone," his voice cracked. Shit. He looked away with a nervous chuckle, "I really didn't want to, I swear, but I feel bad and I think I need to apologize.."

"Do you remember who it was? I'm sure they'll be open to some sort of conversation, especially once the reports of today's events go out." Iviaan finished with Syrax's knuckles. "This thing, it puts you out of sound mind. I'm sure they will understand."

The nurse continued her rounds in the background, idly listening to the conversation, “I-If given a moment, I can search through our intake forms and find the individual you’re l-looking for, Lieutenant.”

For some reason, despite coming here with the intention to apologize, the actual possibility that his unfortunate victims could be found right now terrified him: "Maybe-- later! I, uh. I need to sit and remember them better, heh. Sorry. Thank you." He then turned towards Iviaan, trying to appear as small as possible: "You really think so?.."

"I do." Iviaan nodded firmly, expression serious. "That's up to you now, Lieutenant. I wish you the best. Do make sure you get plenty of rest, and take care of yourself?"

The turbolift slides open, revealing the large security officer. He’d likely come through here a bit ago, but now he wasn’t rambling about Daedalus or ranting about Keats’ poetry in Shakespearean prose. There was that, at least, “Starfleet Security. I’m looking for Vedette Cadieux.”

Vee sat up on her biobed. She was getting ready to leave, but... "What can I do for you, officer?" she queried, putting her big hat back on. Can't have an important interrogation without it, can you?

“You can…answer a few questions, Ms. Cadieux,” The officer stepped over to her biobed, arms folded behind his back, “Are you aware that the…parasitic infection originated from scripts which you had copied?”

"From my scripts?" Vedette inclined her head, sounding genuinely offended at such a statement. "Why, of course not, sir. It must have been some mistake."

“It’s no mistake, Ms. Cadieux. Ask one of the medical staff, they can corroborate,” He vaguely waved toward one of the doctors, “Parasitic eggs contained within the ink that reacted to the heat of your readers and infected them.”

"Are you accusing me of something, Commander?" Vedette leant forward, sitting on the edge with her hands perched on either side. "If you are, I would much prefer you get to it, rather than continue to dance about."

“I’m not accusing you of anything, Ms. Cadieux,” He raised an eyebrow. Interesting that she’d leap to that… “Security is aware that there was only one script originally, and it was copied on-board. Did you have someone else copy it for you, or did you do it yourself? And if so, where?”

"My assistant copied it for me. As for where, I hardly have a clue." She sighed, smoothing out her dress before folding both hands in her lap. "Maria Carter."

Maria Carter, yes. A name registered on the cargo alongside two more, and Vedette herself, “And where would I…find your assistant, Ms. Cadieux? Was she infected?”

"I haven't seen her since we took the scripts to the community theatre. To tell the truth, she's not very bright. She might've gotten herself lost somewhere, poor darling." Vedette hummed, a playfully mischievous glint in her red eyes; "And where might I find you, Commander? Off-duty, that is."
