[D] Upon arriving on the starbase Quinn had immediately come to their quarters, all while memorising the layout of everywhere they went to best navigate the huge facility they were now stationed on. Upon arriving in their quarters, and feeling quite thankful to find out they didn’t have a roommate as of yet, they set about unpacking their many personal possessions. The majority were neatly unpacked and organised on shelves and in draws within their room, but a few choice items were precisely placed within the main living area and the shared bathroom for both viewing pleasure and necessary access. It took roughly half an hour for them to unpack everything, before finally taking a moment to relax and get used to their new living environment. The noise, the smells, the feels. They especially focussed on their bedroom, including adjusting the lighting to suit them, and feeling the bedding to see if it was the same as the kind at the Academy. No, it was somehow softer, or at least it felt that way. Perhaps it was simply the bed itself that was comfier overall.

After a short while of acclimatising to their room and quarters as a whole, Quinn decided the next thing to do would be to go and get a physical. As far as they were aware nothing was wrong with them, and they knew their own medical history, but they couldn't give themself a checkup, so they headed out of their quarters and into the corridor.

[D] Elias entered their shared quarters, their pack slung over one shoulder. A nervous knot settled in their stomach; this was a new place with a new roommate. Setting their pack down on a chair, they surveyed the comfortable living space. They felt eager to have their first posting. They walked to their bedroom, all the while seeing if their roommate was home. The bedroom was comfortable, and they immediately began unpacking small commodities such as books and their own blanket; small peices of home. They decided to rest for a bit before exploring the rest of the starbase.

Feeling rested, they decided to explore the rest of the starbase, and perhaps meet some of the crew. They had gone over the crew roster on the way to the starbase, and the crew was fairly large. Exiting their quarters, they headed towards the more populated areas of the starbase.

Elias entered the quarters, looking around at the still-new environment. It was still a bit of a shock coming back to the comfortably furnished living space, remembering that it was where they lived. They glanced back, waiting for Quinn.

Quinn re-entered their quarters behind Elias, looking around the main room of their quarters briefly as the doors closed behind them. They looked briefly at Elias, before silently heading off to their room. After a moment they returned with their PADD and now without their shoes, and went to sit on the couch.

Briefly, they retreated to their room, took off their shoes, and returned with a soft, knitted black blanket, and their own PADD. They went up to thr replicator. "Hot chocolate." They smiled as the little mug full of the warm, sweet liquid materialized. Sitting down on the other end of the couch, they curled up under the blanket, drawing their legs up to their chest, cupping the hot mug and their hands and propping the PADD up against their knees They glanced at Quinn, thankful for the quiet company. They were curious, though. "If I may ask, Quinn, what're you up to?"

Lt. JG. Quinn Rose | MED BOT 10-Aug-22 10:19 PM
“I’m just messaging my parents.” Quinn replied without so much as looking over at Elias, now busy typing away on their PADD. “What about you?” They asked in return as they stopped typing, seemingly awaiting a response as they turned to look at their roommate, their body remaining in place.

"Catching up on work. Not much else to do at the moment." They smiled ruefully and took a sip from the cup. "I hope your family is well." They fell silent, allowing Quinn to continue.

“They are. They’ve been worrying about me, but I’m fine.” Quinn replied simply, before reading as they received a reply. “My mums say you sound nice. They also sent me a recipe file for the replicator. I have no idea what it is but they said I’d like it.”

They paused and looked back over at them. A small smile bloomed on their face. "You've told your family about me already?" They asked this a bit shyly. They weren't used to others being told about them. Immediately Elias started thinking about what might have been said. They began to worry that was something bad, but mentally smacked themself and remembered that Quinn said their moms thought Elias was nice. "I'm... flattered."

Lt. JG. Quinn Rose | MED BOT 11-Aug-22 01:25 PM
As Elias spoke Quinn was already busy typing away once more, replying to the message they'd received. After finishing typing they looked back at their roommate. "I tell them everything that isn't confidential. The fact I'm sharing quarters with a seemingly competent and friendly person is a reassuring fact for both myself and them. Of course, if I was uncomfortable with the person I was sharing quarters with I would request a change of quarters." They stated in a matter-of-fact tone.

Elias looked back down, smiling softly to themself. They weren't quite sure why that made them feel so happy; it was not an unusual thing for someone to do, to tell their family who they were staying with. Part of them felt... relieved. They had done well; they could relax now. Throughout many of their first interactions, Elias was hyper-aware of their actions and words. They desired to make a good impression. Now that that was accomplished, they calmed down a bit. Putting their PADD aside, they absent-mindedly stared into space. The heat of the cup burned their hands, but they hardly noticed, taking a sip every now and again. "Well, I'm reassured that you think that. I'm... glad to hear that I'm doing well." They let out a chuckle. "My family likes you too."

Lt. JG. Quinn Rose | MED BOT 11-Aug-22 05:12 PM
"When did you tell them about me?" Quinn asked in a curious tone. They had, admittedly, not been paying that much attention, having been entirely focused on their own actions. "As far as first interactions go, yours is high on the list of good ones. I'm... Glad you're my roommate." They said with a small smile, their eyes quickly wandering away to look at something else out of nervousness.

"When I first sat down. They ask how my first couple days were going. I told them i had been to sickbay, to the pomenade, I had met people... and I told them you were polite, kind, and engaging to talk to. And that these quarters are WAY nicer than I expected." They contemplated Quinn's last statements, and they smiled calmly, but inside they were SCREAMING. A bit overexcited, to say the least. They wanted to hug Quinn, but stopped themself and remembered the other's boundaries. Verbal communication would be better. They noticed the other look away, and tried to catch their eye again. "Thank you Quinn, I'm glad." They used a calm tone, and didn't say much, wanting to try and put Quinn at ease, giving them time to process if they needed it.

Quinn smiled to themself when Elias said they were polite, kind, and engaging, and looked back at their roommate when thanked, a slightly warmer smile on their face now as they managed to make eye contact. "You're welcome." They responded in a happy tone, before looking down at their PADD a moment later to read another message that had come in.

"I have to advise you about the potential stiffness you will have in your back and neck as a result of sleeping on the sofa, but I don't mind what you do." Came Quinn's reply as they looked back at their roommate, before turning back to look at their PADD and type another message.

"A small price to pay for a comfy couch. If I sleep talk, just, uh, yell and hit me. I don't trust myself not to say anything secret." Their eyes twinkled. Feeling very content, they put their mug on a side table and happily snuggled deeper into their blanket. Letting out a huge yawn, they shut their eyes and leaned against the armrest, face half-hidden by the blanket. Elias always felt better having the quiet company of someone nearby. The soft sound of Quinn talking to their family lulled them into a doze. They quietly slipped into slumber, their breathing slowed, and they were still, except for the occasional twitch.

'Yeah, I'm not doing that.' Quinn thought in regards to yelling and hitting as they continued typing. They briefly looked over at Elias to make sure they weren't too close for comfort, before carrying on, not giving a second thought to anything right now. This was comfortable.

It was early afternoon when the door chime to Murrow and Rose's quarters chimed - there was an unexpected visitor, unless either of the two of them had arranged for someone to come around.

Elias looked up from their PADD in surprise. Neither they nor Quinn had asked anyone over. Neither of them invited vistitors without the other's knowledge. Getting up from the couch, they walked to the door and opened it.

Stood there was a Romulan officer in Operations yellow, NCO rank pips upon his collar - although it was difficult to see either of the former considering how he was holding a rather large crate in both arms, him having to peer over the top of it in order to see. "Sorry t' bother you, Lieutenant, sir. H'I believe this delivery was meant for the mornin', but considerin' the nature of things-" Almost on cue, the crate shuddered in his arms and what almost looked like a claw swept out from one of the breathing holes at the front of the box. The officer glanced down at the box, pulling a grimace. "-H'I thought it might be better off h'in your care h'immediately, sir."

Lt. JG. Elias Murrow | MED BOT 13-Aug-22 01:56 AM
They stood with an utter look of confusion and surprise on their face. "I- thank you-?" Hesitantly, they reached out to take the crate, wary of the claws. They were curious as to what was in it, but cautious. They didn't know who sent it or what it was. "I'll, uh... well, I'm not sure what I'll do but I'll take care of it. Thanks very much." Their tone still contained notes of perplexity.

The NCO handed the crate over to the Lieutenant very carefully, considering how there was clearly something live in there. Once it had been handed over he stepped back, but quirked an eyebrow at the mention of 'not sure what I'll do.' "Am not sure why you wouldn't know what to do with it, sir - the delivery h'is under your name and no one else's. It looks like there's a h'isolinear rod clipped in t' the top there - suppose that might 'ave some answers for you."

"Thank you..." Setting down the box in a particularly empty area of the room (they were concerned with the living thing breaking certain household items), they stood back. Curiously, they unclipped the rod and held it up to examine it. "I'll, uh, take a look." They plugged the rod into wherever the rods go because I can't remember.

The doors slid closed, leaving Elias alone with the strange delivery. Upon being plugged into the console the isolinear rod showed a handful of documents - and at the top was a file named 'read me,' containing the following message.
Dear Doctor Murrow, I love how we’re able to refer to you in that way now instead of just ‘Student Doctor’ Murrow! When Fethul and I heard the news that you had successfully graduated we were so proud, and to find that you’re serving aboard the station that we visited earlier in the year? Well, we couldn’t be happier! It seems like a lovely place with lots of enthusiastic individuals, and we hope you enjoy it there. We’ll have to visit again at some time in the future, and maybe we could give the remaining part of our lecture, one day! Fethul and I are back aboard the Dyson Sphere now, thanks to the work of yourself and the other staff at Starfleet Medical in saving Fethul from that poison. I’m not sure what would have become of him if Starfleet hadn’t been there to assist us. He’s doing perfectly fine now – again, thanks to all of you! – and he won’t stop reminding me of how we said we would like to give you a little something upon your graduation, as a thanks for your work and being so kind and reassuring to the two of us. We hope that this gift isn’t too out of the ordinary, but you deserved something interesting! The other documents on this isolinear rod contain information on how to look after your gift, including biological data files if you would ever like to have a read. If not, then please just enjoy your new pet! Good luck with your new posting, and congratulations again! Yours faithfully (or is it sincerely, the two of us can never remember,) Professors Finellan and Fethul Drex.

Upon finishing the letter, Elias smiled warmly and recalled the aforementioned events. It had been quite the adventure. They remembered the two, but hadn't expected them to remember Elias, at least not this long. They would have to remember to write a letter back later. Feeling much more sure of themself, a bubbly sense of happiness and childlike curiosity rose in then as they skimmed the other documents, before looking back at the box, now with much more understanding. Hands trembling with anticipation, they opened the box to gaze upon its contents.

As soon as the lid of the crate was off a head shot up, this spined, scaly, lizard-like thing just there in the box, but it didn't do anything. Instead, it just looked, watching Elias... And then when it chirped, the little thing almost looked like it was grinning.

Though they knew what to expect - well, as best they could, anyway - Elias fell back in surprise, before laughing and covering their mouth with their hands. "Oh my God, you are the cutest, aren't you?" They cooed at the creature. "Wow, I- wasn't expecting this, but it's a welcome surprise. I suppose I have been thinking about having a pet for a while." Still overjoyed, they tentatively reached towards it.

[D]It had been a few days since Elias had met the Captain in the park, and it had left them feeling a bit lighter ever since. At least, until the... well, dinosaur, arrived. How woukd they explain this to Quinn? Elias could see it now: 'Ah, well, you see, I know we talked about the whole 'no unexpected visitors' thing, but this package arrived and there's a raptor now.' They watched aa it blinked and twist its head this way and that. "Oh boy." Lifting the scaly baby out of the box, Elias winced as it writhed for a second and dug in its claws, before coming to a rest with its head on their shoulder. They decided it would be best to clear a space in their room, set it down, and close the door until they could talk to Quinn.

[D] Quinn, having been working up until now, came back to their quarters at the end of their shift. Breathing holes? Oh no.

Elias looked like a deer in headlights as they froze outside of their closed quarters. Awkwardly, they walked back next to the box and rocked back and forth on their toes, hands behind their back. "So-" Immediately they were interrupted by a series of chirps and a thump from their room. They cringed and waited for a second before continuing. "I received a... thank you/graduation gift of sorts from two Voth, one of which I helped save back at the academy." They tripped over their words a bit, anxious to get to an explanation. Quinn had thought positively of them! They shared their boundaries! And here Elias was, violating them! Although, even they hadn't expected to have another living thing in their quarters. "It arrived earlier today... I'm prepared to have it live somewhere else. I'm sorry, I know this is a direct violation of our boundaries. I..." They trailed off, waving vaguely towards the box. "Wasn't expecting this. It's a raptor." They fell silent.

Lt. JG. Quinn Rose | MED BOT 13-Aug-22 03:22 PM
As Elias spoke Quinn continued to look directly at the box with a straight face, their mind processing everything and, admittedly, tripping over itself. What if it doesn't like me? What if I don't like it? What if it goes in my room? What if it messes with my stuff? What if... "Wait did you say 'raptor'?" They asked quickly, interrupting their own thoughts as they looked back up at Elias with a straight face and a questioning tone.

"Erm... yeah. Raptor. It's small, though. It's head barely reaches my knee." A reptilian trill erupted from Elias' room. It warbled mournfully at the fact that it had been put away. Elias couldn't help but smile a bit as it chirped. It sounded like a baby crocodile. "I'm going to see if I can train it. And I can keep it in my room." They added the last part hurriedly.

"Well- I'll be right back." Picking up the box, they entered their room amd closed the door behind them. They shushed the dino as they replicated some of the food mentioned in the care instructions, before heading back out. They sat down on the couch. "I'm not sure. All that was said was that they wanted to give me a gift, and that they hoped it was not too out of the ordinary." This time, the dino was much quieter, happily munching on some food.

Quinn stood silently in the middle of the room, their mind processing everything as they idly moved their fingers and thumbs, both of their hands closed and sitting slightly in front of them. As Elias came back out they looked over at them, listening to what they had to say. Instead of responding, however, the Lieutenant simply turned towards their room and started heading towards it. However, they stopped before entering, standing there for a moment, before turning back to look at their roommate. "I want to see it."

Elias anxiously wrung their hands, disappearing to their room for a few moments. Sounds of things shuffling could be heard. A few minutes later, they exited, and in their arms was the baby raptor. It was curled, tiny head poking up above Elias' arms. It's colors were still vibrant with youth, and the artificial light shone on its deep blue-gray scales, revealing hints of dark red and purple. Dark stripes criss-crossed its body. The dark green frill that ran from its head to its tail perked up in interest, as it's large eyes landed on Quinn. It did not have the air of a predator; merely a curious animal. Elias made sure to stand at a distance from Quinn, so their roommate could process and not feel crowded. They held the baby tightly, to ensure that it would not leap out of their arms, and anxiously looked at Quinn, trying to decipher their thoughts. They must be so angry. What if they request a transfer? I don't want to overwhelm them.

Quinn watched as Elias brought the little lizard thing out of their room, opting to stay back by their own room to keep distance between themself and the reptile. Despite their dislikement of new and unknown things they didn't show really any expression on their face to suggest they were in any discomfort. Nor, as a matter of fact, could they help but watch the little creature with curiosity, studying how it behaved. It was after a good while of silence that they spoke once more, but not before double checking that their bedroom door was closed. "Can you put it down? I'd like to see what it does."

Lt. JG. Elias Murrow | MED BOT 13-Aug-22 08:15 PM
"Yeah, of course." Elias set down the raptor gently, and immediately it set its sights on Quinn. It stumbled a bit; its little arms didn't quite reach the floor, and its back feet were quite big for its body. Tentatively, it sniffed the air, crept forward, ready to bolt at the slightest sign of danger, and sniffed Quinn's shoes, nibbling on them a bit to see how they tasted. "Shoot, I'm so sorry-" Elias started forward to grab it, but it chirped happily and wrapped its little tail around Quinn's ankle. "I think he likes you!"

[D]After making their way back up to their quarters, Elias had been thinking. There was something that had always been in the back of their mind, but recently it had come to the front, occupying them most of the time. They decided it would be good to talk to Quinn about it, not only because they were Elias' roommate, but also because they were a fellow doctor. They felt nervous as they walked into their quarters, sitting down on the couch amd fidgeting. Leo curled uo at their feet, but it didn't comfort them like it usually it.

As the doors opened the Junior Doctor walked in and started heading directly to their room, already starting to take their jacket off as they neared their door. “Hello Elias.” They greeted in their usual friendly-yet-simple way. However, what wasn’t the norm was a different vibe seemingly emanating from Elias. Despite not being an empath Quinn stopped in their tracks just outside their room and turned to face their roommate, jacket unfastened. “Is something wrong? You don’t normally fidget that much.” They asked, their tone when asking this question having shifted entirely from off-duty mode to doctor mode.

Elias looked up and tried to smile at Quinn, but really they were quite nervous, although they didn't know why. They didn't exactly expect Quinn to be angry with what they were going to say. They hauled Leo onto their lap for comfort and hugged him, lightly stroking his head. He warbled, accepting the current situation, and proceeded to happily conk out. "I wanted to talk about something. That I've wanted to do. For a while." They spoke awkwardly, worrying at one of their fingernails. They rarely ever got so agitated. "Do you mind taking a seat?"

"What did you want to talk about?"

Elias took a deep breath and tentatively glanced over at Quinn. "I've been thinking about having an... an operation. On my chest." They danced around the topic a bit, and again glanced at Quinn. The fear of disappointment and/or disgust at what Elias was about to say was strong, even though in this day and age, many more things were much more widely accepted. Still, their mouth felt dry and their hands felt clammy. "It makes me feel... bad. The way it is now."

Quinn watched in silence as Elias spoke, listening in the same way any doctor would, with a simple look of paying attention on their face. The skirting around what they meant only served to confuse the Junior Doctor, but it was their job to decipher what patients meant so this was no different. After a moment of silence they replied, their tone sounding reassuring and relaxed as a small smile appeared on their face. "Elias, we're both doctors. You don't need to skirt around telling me you want an elective mastectomy."

I just haven't told anyone before and I suppose I wasn't sure how." They turned their head to Quinn and smiled faintly; the adrenaline hadn't quite left them yet. "I'm... grateful you understand. Thank you, Quinn. Now I just need to... go to Medical... and ask more doctors to do it..." They trailed off, worried about how that might go.

"You don't need to be grateful. If I didn't understand I would be a terrible doctor." Quinn replied, their face turning very serious as they said the word 'terrible', their mind thinking about the possibility of any doctor not understanding the medical needs of someone. However, their friendly small smile soon returned. "I can accompany you to the Hospital Ring when you go if you wish. I don't know of a rule that says I can't provide care for my roommate, but that being said I am only a Junior Doctor, and I believe it would be best for you to speak with one of our more experienced colleagues before making a final decision. I can't perform the procedure either way, but I can still offer advice and support." They added simply.

Elias' brightened up; they smiled again. "I would appreciate it if you could come with me." They felt so happy that they had been granted a roommate like Quinn. Looking back down at Leo, they patted his head, contemplating. They were eager to get the operation. They had been for a while, and they were tired of waiting (even though it was their own fault they hadn't had it done it sooner). But what if it was a mistake? What if after it was done, Elias didn't like it? Should they wait longer, to make sure they really know that they want this? They fought with themself about it. "I want to do it soon." The words were out of their mouth before they realized they had apparently come to a decision. Elias would go one step at a time, and they knew that if something didn't work out, they had Quinn. "I'm tired of feeling bad about it." A bit of bitterness slipped into their voice, and they checked themself; they didn't want to trap Quinn with their ramblings.

Quinn nodded silently in response. The desire to get it done as soon as possible was certainly understandable. "When do you intend on going to the Hospital Ring? I'd like to know if possible so I can work around it." They stated simply, although still very much so in on duty mode. "As you know this procedure can be reversed, so there's no harm in changing your mind later down the line should you wish to do so. Gender identity can sometimes be very fluid, so it's not always a simple yes or no solution."

Elias thought for a moment. "Maybe tomorrow?" They had relaxed, put at ease by Quinn's tone and words. With the most stressful part of the conversation over and the adrenaline gone, Elias' heart had room to feel a torrent of emotions; fear, happiness, anticipation, consternation, eagerness, sadness. * "You're right. Sometimes I forget that we can reverse it if needed. I'm sure I want this, though." *They said firmly. "But..." They added. "It's good to have a backup plan."

"Tomorrow works." Quinn replied with a small smile. "I have a shift tomorrow so it will line up well with that." They added, before reaching into their jacket pocket and pulling their PADD out to look at their schedule. "I have no appointments with any patients so unless something comes up I should be free to assist you."

They abruptly wiped their face, sniffling a bit but holding themself back. "Thank you, Quinn." Their support meant more to Elias than Quinn knew. Elias was on a new station and hadn't met many people yet, but already Quinn had volunteered to see them through this. Their eyes blurred, in a happy kind of way, and a few tears fell - plink, plink - onto their folded hands.

Still very much so in work mode, Quinn watched Elias’ behaviour for a moment, before standing up and going to the replicator. “Box of tissues, plain.” Once replicated, the Junior Doctor returned to the couch and sat down, holding the box out to their roommate to offer a tissue. “I have no idea why I hadn’t replicated some earlier. I usually always have a box for one reason or another.”

Elias accepted some tissues gratefully and roughly wiped their eyes. "My apologies. I'm not usually like this." They chuckled weakly and sniffled again. They were silent for a moment, composing themself, and suddenly they were back to the polite, slightly more reserved Elias; or at least, that's what they wanted to think. They looked up, facial features no longer contorted with emotion. "Well. Tomorrow's the big day then." They smiled, and felt more at ease, but unconsciously began to rip up the tissues.

Quinn once again watched Elias' behaviour. They weren't a therapist, or a counsellor, but they had basic mental health training like everyone else, and they could tell they were anxious. "You should try and relax. This is your choice, your wish, and no one can force you to do anything. But, you deserve to be happy in your body." They said in a reassuring tone. "There's really no need to be anxious, I assure you."

Elias stopped themself by clasping their hands, and after a moment they got up and disposed of the tissues. "No, no, you're right. You're absolutely right." They breathed deeply and sat back down, petting Leo. "Alright. Let's do this. Tomorrow, at least." They chuckled a bit and smiled warmly at Quinn, now actually feeling better

Attached to the message was a collection of holophotos automatically taken from various locations during the scavenger hunt, similar to ride photos on a rollercoaster. There was one from each key moment during their adventure, showing the best moments off. Each photo was angled to capture everyone involved so no one was left out, and they were all perfectly timed to show the happiest moments the group experienced.
