Austin slowly placed down the loft gift basket. He had spent quite a bit of time working on the presentation. He thought it looked great and hoped Dagis would like it just as much. The gift was a representation of his homeland in many respects. One may be able to figure out who he was by such a pretense of everything being from the Seattle region but he figured it would make for a nice gift. The basket included a few different varieties of chocolate, mostly coffee flavored. Ofcourse he included some of the local coffee brands. Finally he included a replicator program for a multi course meal that he had prepared. It started with a appetizer of shellfish, followed by Dungeness crab (served with a classic butter sauce) and finally it finished with a cupcake for desert. He was hopeful that dagis enjoyed shellfish but she didn't have to use the program if she didn't want to. Finally, a couple of Austin's favorite books were placed ontop. Those books were: "The Oddyssey", "Romeo and Juliet" and "Les Miserables"
01:16
Finally after it was all placed infront of the door Austin he sprinted away. He was a fast runner so hopefully he could make it back to his quarters before anyone would spot him.

A present arrived for Giles: History of the Federation, as told by Andorian Shran Ch'chaannit; The Mystery of the Gorn, by John Smitty (A thriller novel written based on the loose descriptions of the Gorn race. Written similar to that of The Swamp Thing); 1001 Math and Logic Puzzles to Confuse Trills (A collection of various math proofs and logic puzzles that are written by a Joined Trill. Written in between puzzles are various anecdotes and thoughts that the writer had at the time of publishing. Through these small stories and thoughts, there is some brief history and facts about the species and what they are like both before and after fusion.)

These three books are neatly arranged inside a basket that had various small treats of various backgrounds, ranging from hard candies, to chocolate covered popcorn that were perfectly selected to be reading companions as they wouldn’t leave any residue on the finger. This is all packaged with some clear shrink wrap and a neat bow on the top in plaid red and green. There is a few white and red dog hairs that did get stuck by static to the outside of the wrapping. There is a simple note written stating, “Hope you enjoy all the best things this year has to offer, Stone.”

To: Lieutenant Dagis To Dagis, I am not really sure how to start this. I've been thinking for so long about sending you a letter but I would think of something to say and then decide not to. But it's Christmas, and I saw the news article about Section 31, so I thought maybe I should finally message you. There.is a lot I think of that I want to say, so I'm trying to remember it all, and they say putting bullet points makes things easier, so: • To stop you from wondering if I speak about something else first: I am okay. • I can't remember a lot of more recent memories. it's foggy • I don't think I can feel as much as I used to. I don't know if that's good or bad because of how bad I know it was before • I can't work yet. I can't be in my mother's orchestra because frontal lobe damage kills voluntary movement and organisational skills. I think that annoys her more than what happened to me • I don't think it annoys me personally. I don't like to think about what happened because it's a horrible thing, but I think I'm resigned to it • It's hard to tell. They're trying to repair damage so I understand everything medically but emotionally it's distant. it's strange • I can't work and I'll never practice medicine again. I don't think I like that the people who do recovery with me are who I'm meant to be • But we knew that already because of Starfleet • I know that I'm still annoyed at them for what they did. I think it's the strongest emotion I know • but I know that it's over and there's no changing it..so I'm resigned to it
23:41
• I know that I don't blame you any more. It's not fair what happened to me when you get off with what you did. but that's on the system, and not on you • I don't agree with what you did but I understand your reasons. If our family is everything to us would you not do everything to protect them • I cant remember all of it but I know we parted on bad terms. I know that's the strongest anger I had. but I don't have that now and it's not just because I can't feel it. it's because I know not to be angry at you • i know you're not a bad person. and I don't think I m a bad person. I think I just was not dojng sogood • and Im sorry for whatever I said. you wouldn't have deserved that • Imcsorry • and I hope you're w2llcand that you can find peace • and that starfleet keeps helping you more than they helped me • ephesians 4:32 • "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you" • I understand if you would not want to forgive me and its selfish to ask. but if you would not want to forgive me, please know at least that I do forgive you. -- Vince Ferrufino.

Lieutenant Dagis | OPS BOT 27-Dec-22 04:46 PM
[D] Despite having been on half shifts for the past couple of weeks it had been several days between Dagis bringing the gift basket into her quarters and her actually opening it. Her priority had been Jericho and the Winter Ball, so it was only after the ball and after catching up on her work that the woman actually thought to open it. Sat in her quarters on the sofa she did just that, her eyes studying every item she removed from the basket with a small smile on her face. Books, food, coffee, as well as a replicator program. All nice things, and all very appreciated. It was as she was reading some of the labels of the coffees, though, that the woman's attention was suddenly dragged away by her PADD notifying her of a new message. Curious, and very much so off duty, she put the coffee down and picked it up to see who had sent her what. As the Ferengi saw exactly who had sent the message she froze, completely unable to move as her heart rate increased and her mind kept re-reading and processing who the sender was. Vincent...? Dagis sat in silence, unable to even try to begin reading the message for several minutes before forcing herself to put the PADD down and just take a minute to breathe. After that minute, and feeling a little calmer, she began reading the message, her legs now curled up on the sofa as she did. Abd as she did her body and heart were filled with so many different emotions. Guilt, sadness, happiness, bitterness, the lot. He was okay, he was recovering, he didn't blame her anymore, he understood her reasons for what she did, he's not angry with her, she isn't a bad person, he was sorry about what happened. He forgave her. x_divider
16:46
Dagis re-read the message over and over as she desperately tried to process everything that he had said. Her PADD was still protected with the case he had given her, and so it was after a few minutes that she finally broke down into tears, clutching her PADD against her chest as if to hug it as she closed her eyes and let herself feel all the many emotions she was experiencing. Be yourself, feel however you want to feel. The Ferengi sat there curled up and crying for over ten minutes, occasionally re-reading the message again as she processed being forgiven by the first friend she had made since first being assigned to the starbase. The first friend she had made since being forced to work for the Section, even. Some time passed as the remained on the sofa, her mind processing things and replaying horrible memories, but also knowing Vincent didn't think she was a bad person. Her Secret Santa's gifts were appreciated immensely, but what she appreciated even more was the gift of forgiveness. And it was with that in mind, combined with the time of year, that she started to slowly compose a reply, tears still running down her cheeks as she did. x_divider

To: Vincent Ferrufino To Vince, I'm not really sure what to say in response to everything you said, in truth. I've never been good with words. But I think I'm going to borrow your bullet point formatting because it just works, and I'm going to try to reply. I'm sorry if this is nothing more than a ramble. • I've been coping with everything okay, I think. I haven't come to terms with everything I've done, but I'm learning to live with the guilt. I have someone in my life who supports me through it all. • I'm sorry you can't practice medicine anymore, I know how much that meant to you, but I'm glad you're okay. • I'm sorry you can't work yet, and I'm sorry your mother is more annoyed with you not being able to work in her orchestra than what happened to you. • I hope you recover more, you deserve to recover. You don't deserve what they did to you. No one does. • I hate what they did to you, and I hate them for everything they've ever done to hurt people including you. • I know hate is such a strong feeling but I do genuinely hate them, but I'm trying to use that hate for good. • I wish I could tell you about recent events but they're classified to within Starfleet only. I'm sorry. But I'm doing what I can to stop them. • Thank you for not blaming me. I'm still sorry you got the outcome you did. You didn't deserve it. • I don't agree with anything I did either, but I appreciate you understanding my reasons. My family means everything to me.
16:46
• We did part on bad terms, but I don't want to be on them any more. I've never wanted to be on them. • You're not a bad person. You never have been. You never will be. • I'm sorry for everything that's happened. I'm so sorry. • I'm trying to find peace, and I hope I will. I hope you find peace in everything as well. • Starfleet are helping me more than I could ever thank them for, but I'm trying to earn their support and help by doing right by them and everyone in the Federation. • I won't stop trying until Section 31 are powerless and unable to hurt anyone anymore. I promise you none of this will be for nothing. • Rule of Acquisition № 88: It ain't over 'til it's over. • I forgive you, and words can't express how happy you've made me today by forgiving me. It's the best gift I could ever ask for Christmas. • If you want to keep in contact I would like that, but if you don't I understand. But I would like to keep in touch. I would like to have you in my life again. Thank you, Vince. - Dagis

It wasn’t difficult to find out what time Dagis was working until. Most crew rosters and rotas were publicly available, and it didn’t take much of a guess to work out she would be on alpha shift – that was what the senior staff worked for the most of the time. How lucky it was that his own being discharged from the medical bay (he liked to class it as escaping, but technically speaking, he had been voluntarily let out) lined up rather perfectly with the last half an hour of the alpha shift. It meant that he hadn’t too long to wait – eight minutes, forty-seven seconds – until the end of the alpha shift… And he had already checked Dagis’s schedule (that had taken a little more work) to ensure that she had nothing arranged after the shift, which likely meant that she would head back here. He could have asked the Computer for what deck she was on so he could predict exactly how long it would take for her to walk here as well, but that felt a little extreme. Instead, he just sat here waiting, having taken up residence on Dagis’s – no, their sofa - gosh that felt odd to think about – with his newly acquired in-re-training service dog sat beside him. What normally would have been nervousness had been replaced by an excited anticipation – eager for Dagis to walk in and find him here, free from the medical bay after what had been well over a month, and hopefully free of the dire conversations they had had and just… Happy, and as back to normal as possible as things could be again.

Lieutenant Dagis | OPS BOT 07-Jan-23 04:49 PM
Since the Winter Ball and much smaller New Year get together Dagis had slowly transitioned herself back from half shifts to full shifts, having decided it best to not overwhelm herself and instead try to balance out the load better than she had been previously doing. It was as one of her full shifts finished that the woman had made her way back towards her quarters at a leisurely pace, feeling quite relieved to not have anything else scheduled as she had been on her feet all day going from place to place in order to either observe various maintenance projects or perform various other duties of her own. From the promenade to the parkland to the Engineering section, she had been everywhere today and was very much so looking forward to kicking her boots off as soon as she got in the door. And it was as the Ferengi got back to her quarters that said doors slid open and she stepped in with a relieved sigh, her eyes fixated entirely on the PADD that she held in her hands as she bent down to take her boots off. It was as she stood up again, though, that she caught a glimpse of something on the couch in her peripheral vision, at which point she looked away from her PADD screen and towards whatever it was. It was only as her brain properly registered both a person and an animal, though, that she actually jumped in shock accompanied with a sharp inhale, nearly dropping her PADD in the process as her eyes widened and heart rate increased, only for them to relax a moment later and her mind to calm down as she realised just who was sat on her couch... Or, well, it wasn't just her couch any more, was it? x_divider
16:49
"Good grief, Jadriel." Dagis exclaimed with a slow exhale as one of her hands went to rest on her chest, sounding both relieved and amused as a smile crept across her face and a chuckle escaped her mouth, her blue eyes locked with his own for a good few seconds before breaking away, her expression quickly changing to that of thought and a slight bit of confusion. The woman looked back and forth between the dog, the Trill (studying what he was wearing), and her quarters for a good moment, before finally looking back at her partner as a hopeful smile crept across her face. "Are you... Out-out?" She asked as she slowly stepped further into the room and towards the couch. She didn't want to get her hopes up, but at the same time she was struggling to remain quite as calm as she was.

It was very much – no, entirely incredibly like Dagis to have her face buried in her PADD as she entered. Giles was surprised that half of the incident reports filed by Operations weren’t in regards to Dagis crashing into other people or various objects from not looking where she was going. Perhaps she had some sort of sixth sense that made her aware of objects even if she wasn’t looking – for all he knew, that could be a Ferengi thing – and it would make sense for her to drop that attentiveness when she had entered her own quarters… You know, the place that was secure and was supposed to not have people lingering there, waiting. She was lucky he wasn’t a murderer (you know, what with Section 31 having been after both of them and all) because one very much could have taken advantage of the situation – but that being said, he had no doubts that Dagis couldn’t hold her own. Her Section 31 training probably had defence against attacks as muscle memory. Maybe he ought to jokingly tackle-hug her and find out… But considering how that would probably end up with him on the ground in a ‘help, I’ve fallen, and I can’t get up’-esque situation, it was a bad idea. x_divider
18:10
So instead of doing anything he just sat there, eerily silent, with Turing equally silent (aside from the dog panting happily, seemingly enthusiastic because look! New person to see!) How long was it going to take before she noticed him there, how long, how long… Not much longer, the mental timer of his (because of course he was counting, when wasn’t he) stopping as soon as Dagis jumped. He couldn’t help but chuckle a little – surprising her had been his intent after all – but he thought it better to apologise anyway. “Sorry,” he started, but was still smiling from the amusement. “I was wondering how long it was going to take for you to notice me – how do you avoid walking into walls when you’re never not looking at your PADD? I – Sir, can you not,” the statement he broke off into was directed towards the collie who had decided to try to drape himself over the length of the sofa, both taking up Dagis’s own side of the couch and getting fur all over Giles’s trousers (dressed in his usual casual-wear which was more business-casual than anything, with the zip-neck jumper and the work trousers and all). “And yes – out, out. Free as a bird… Unless you’re a bird on the environmental ring, because technically you’re not free. As free as one can be, aboard a starbase.”

Lieutenant Dagis | OPS BOT 07-Jan-23 06:51 PM
"Well actually I-" Was as far as Dagis' almost instant response to the question about how she didn't walk into walls got as Turing decided to get comfortable and simultaneously spread fur everywhere. The Trill calling the dog 'sir' was extremely funny to the Ferengi, to the extent where, despite having obsessively cleaned her quarters to make it safe for her partner to be in and now having to contend with fur, a snort-like sound escaped her nose in an attempt to not just out right laugh at the situation in general. It was as Jadriel said he was properly out of the medical bay (at least for now) that a warm, happy smile immediately spread across her face, before being replaced by an amused but loving one as her partner went on to mention how the birds that resided on the environmental ring weren't actually free. It was with that statement of confirmation that she decided to let herself be herself as she usually tried so very hard to do, and as such the woman finished making her way over to the couch and put her PADD down on the coffee table as she passed it, immediately moving to wrap her arms around her partner's shoulders to hug him where he sat. "I'm so happy you're out." Dagis said warmly as her head rested against his own, before moving to gently kiss him on the forehead which, without bending over to a greater degree, was the only place she could really reach to actually kiss him. After was was only a brief moment of embrace, feeling her back already regretting her decision, the woman slowly moved away and instead moved one of her hands to gently take the Trill's own, which as far as her body was concerned was far preferable to remaining bent over. x_divider
18:51
"Do you like the re-arrange, by the way?" The Ferengi asked as she briefly looked into her partner's eyes, before turning to look around the main living area, all while giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "I think our plans turned out well, although I could be biased. Have you decided where Turing is going to sleep yet? I can move a few things if needs be, but I tried to take into consideration space for dog stuff. Having said that, though, I assume he'd be staying as close to you as possible, so that sort of answers my question for me, doesn't it?" She asked with a smile and a chuckle as she looked back at the man sat on her - no, their couch, and then at the fur-depositor in question, before somewhat begrudgingly letting go of Jadriel's hand in order to take her uniform jacket off, of which she then neatly folded and put to one side for her to take into her room later. Tidying that away could wait for now.

Lieutenant Jadriel Ruhko | SEC BOT 07-Jan-23 08:32 PM
He watched what Dagis was doing while he simultaneously tried to give Turing the hint that he should maybe move, gently nudging the dog’s side as if to indicate a ‘get off the couch, please’. It didn’t work, and Turing remained there, quite happy with himself. From what he had found so far, when he didn’t have his little ‘I’m at work! Don’t disturb me!’ jacket on, Turing was still attentive but also very chill. While some dogs liked to run about the place and were incredibly energetic, this collie seemed to be more of the ‘let’s relax’ type… But that being said, he did seem to enjoy meeting new people; he had spent a good time wandering around sniffing at people outside of the medical bay, and now he did the same to Dagis. The dog moved juuuust enough that he could sniff at her as soon as she got close enough. And as for being close enough: it was awkward, considering how Dagis was standing, but the hug was reciprocated as best as possible, one-armed only with the other arm having been trapped by the dog lain on top of it. Then there was the kiss to his forehead, which (in typical fashion) immediately made him blush. Look at this – all the attention just because he had avoided death again. Did he mind the attention? Well. Not if it was from Dagis. He didn’t mind at all. x_divider
20:32
“I’m glad to be out too,” he mused, returning the squeeze of the hand that she gave, before relinquishing the grasp so that Dagis could move. “As good as the medical staff are, the interior of sickbay does get a little boring after the first few days. And yes – I do like the re-arrange. Your staff do a fine job.” He still felt a little guilty for making Dagis change the layout of her quarters, but he kept pushing that aside by telling himself that she had been the one who had asked. “Something tells me that Turing will be the one to decide where he’s sleeping, regardless of what we say or do. …Do you mind him being on the couch? I’d get him to move, but-“ he gave the dog’s back a slightly firmer push. Still nothing, other than a look from Turing who just seemed amused by things. “-I don’t think he’s gotten used to listening to me yet. Either that or he just doesn’t care.”

Lieutenant Dagis | OPS BOT 07-Jan-23 10:17 PM
As per what was very much so the usual for her, Dagis listened to what Jadriel said intently and without any interruptions aside from a slight chuckle in response to him saying sickbay could get boring after a while. Her partner saying he liked the re-arrange elicited another smile from the Ferengi, feeling quite relieved that it all turned out well (and also quite relieved that she didn’t have to bother her own staff just to make changes). Another chuckle was had at the comment about Turing deciding where he’d sleep rather than the other way around. It was funny, really. From everything the woman knew about domesticated Earth animals she would’ve expected the collie to behave and do as he was told, and yet the fluffy thing was doing the exact opposite when it came to moving so she could sit or so the Trill could get his other hand back. “I don’t mind him being on there, no.” She replied with a smile as she looked down at the dog, and then back up at the man underneath it. “Just so long as he doesn’t go on my bed I’ll be happy.” She added with a chuckle, all while internally cringing at the idea of both being squished in her sleep by a dog, and at the thought of all the fur going everywhere. x_divider
22:17
It was with the thought of Turing simply not wanting to move in mind that Dagis decided to surrender all thought of sitting next to her partner and instead went and sat in one of the adjacent chairs, but not before adjusting it ever so slightly so as to better face towards the couch. “Does he usually behave like this when on duty, so to speak? Or does he actually treat his job seriously?” The woman asked in a joking tone as she once again looked between Jadriel and the fur-shedder. “I don’t know about you, but I think he’s quite cute. I haven’t really properly been around any dogs before, and the ones I have were just passers by during my time at the Academy. Living with one is going to be quite different.” She said with a slight chuckle as her blue eyes looked into her partner’s own glowing ones. Living with the person you love was also going to be very different, but she knew it was the right decision to make. “Is there anything I need to know, or that I can help out with at all? I heard they can be compared to children sometimes, so I have to wonder how much work is involved with looking after one. Ignoring the fur needing to be cleaned up, that is.”
Avatar
Lieutenant Jadriel Ruhko | SEC BOT 07-Jan-23 10:42 PM
”I can’t guarantee that,” he replied to the comment about Dagis not wanting Turing to go on her bed. With any luck, the dog would be well behaved, but from what Giles had seen so far, he liked to be comfortable… And people were comfortable, it seemed. “Go on, let Dagis sit down, move over-“ he tried again, but by the time Turing had thought to move his head so Dagis could worm her way onto the sofa, she had already taken a seat in the adjacent armchair. Oh well – he had tried. From what the agency had told him in their correspondence, Turing was a highly skilled dog, and Giles had already seen that for himself on a few occasions. Perhaps not having had a family – or any work to do – for a good few months had made him a little lazy, though. Giles didn’t really mind. Any animal, a working animal or not, deserved to be comfortable. It wouldn’t exactly be fair if they weren’t. “I’m sorry about the fur – I mean, it’s frustrating, but at least he’s soft. And he is well trained, I promise. He’s passed every test so far. He knows when it’s time to work – as soon as the harness goes on, he knows – and he is still attentive at every other time as well. Actually, there is an easy way to get him down – Turing, fetch the hypospray?” x_divider
22:42
And there it was: just like Giles had said, the easy way of getting the dog to move. He should have thought of that before. It only took a few seconds for Turing to leap down from the sofa and cross the room to where Giles’s jacket had been draped over the back of a chair. With his teeth, the dog took a hold of a corner to tug the jacket down; then went nosing around in the interior until he found what he was looking for in the inner-right pocket. “See?” Giles said as the dog walked back over (and then subsequently deposited a hypospray set into the Trill’s lap, hypospray and a multitude of cartridges all bundled together). Cue Turing getting petted as a reward; head-scritches between the ears. “He’s always listening, and he knows what he’s doing. I think he likes to laze around, but he’s smart, really. He’s been working as a service dog for years already, so I don’t think we should have much issue with him. He’s probably going to do more looking after me than I’m going to do looking after him.”

Watching Jadriel try and get Turing to move so she could sit filled Dagis with a combination of amusement and appreciation, but she also didn’t really want to disturb the dog because, well, look at him. He was just too cute. As she once again listened to what her partner said the woman idly crossed her legs, feeling more than content with the idea of this just… Being the norm. Living together, spending time together, getting to chat more often. It was everything she had ever wanted out of any relationship, be it romantic or otherwise, so to finally be able to experience it was an amazing feeling. As the Trill apologised about the fur she gestured in a ‘don’t worry about it’ sort of way and gave a reassuring smile. If she had to choose between fur going everywhere and his health she’d always choose the latter. Hearing the dog was indeed well trained and frankly very competent was reassuring, but it was also somewhat amusing to her to think about the contrast between a fairly chill and yet also very attentive dog. It was as the Trill instructed the collie to fetch the hypospray, though, that the woman’s attention quickly shifted away from her partner and to the dog in pure curiosity as he got up, headed across the room, tugged the jacket down to a height he could work at, got the hypospray set, and then returned to Jadriel and placed it in his lap. x_divider
23:52
As Turing got his little head-scritches a rather impressed and toothy grin spread across the Ferengi’s face as she looked back up at her partner. “I’ve never seen an animal do anything like that before.” Dagis commented before very quickly seizing the opportunity to get up from her chair and move to sit down on the couch next to the Trill while Turing wasn’t blocking it. The woman immediately found herself ever so gently leant against her partner as she sat, finally able to do what she wanted to moments earlier. Her eyes once again found their way to meet with her partner’s own (albeit slightly more awkwardly as they were directly next to each other) as she spoke again. “I’m honestly really impressed, even if that might be quite basic and easy for a dog to do. I’ll be the first to admit I don’t know a lot about them, or really any animals from Earth, but I think that’s something I want to learn more about. I presume you have to bath him? It’s a good job I… We have a bath, isn’t it?” She added with a chuckle. (edited)

”There are a whole multitude of animals that can be trained for this sort of thing – animals from all different planets. If you can teach it to sit or roll over then you can probably do the rest. You throw a ball for a dog and it’ll bring it back, so you can teach it to bring back anything else, too.” He paused, watching as Turing looked between both Giles and Dagis as if to say ‘hey, you stole my seat.’ There was a moment where he moved as if he was going to try to climb up anyway, but then he stopped and just sat on the ground, but as close to the couch as possible. The dog then leaned forwards and sat its head on Dagis’s knee, looking up at her with those pleading puppy-dog eyes as if asking for his seat back. “Don’t move – he’s going to have to learn to share eventually. Yes, yes, on you go-“ he stated, watching Turing then give up on trying to convince Dagis with the power of being cute. The dog slinked away, only to go and flop down directly on top of the jacket that he had pulled off the chair only moments before. “-Oh, fine. I suppose that’s yours now.” x_divider

Giles shook his head while he watched Turing go, but at the same time, he was still smiling in amusement. You couldn’t be mad at the collie, really; he was far too cute for that, and having a pet with personality was actually rather fun. Giles was just glad that he hadn’t ended up with a dog that had the overly energetic sort of personality. He would never have kept up. “I think the reason that these Earth dogs are so suitable is because they’re easy to train, and a lot of them have heightened senses of smell, and things – it makes them ideal candidates for being service animals. You can train different animals too, but it’s just that not all of them are very suitable for living somewhere like here —you know, aboard a starbase. It wouldn’t be as easy wandering about with a targ than it would be with a dog. And they’re easy to look after, too – it’s funny you should mention giving him a bath, because apparently, he likes to be pampered. Likes to have fur shampoo put in and all…”

Dagis happily listened along once again as Jadriel spoke about service animals as a whole. It was very interesting to her to hear about how if you couch teach them basic tricks you could probably get them to do everything else needed for a service animal to do. As Turing looked between her and her partner the woman had a small smile of amusement on her face, and as he decide to rest his head on her knee and try and guilt trip her into letting him have his spot on the couch back the amused smile remained, but was now accompanied by a degree of heart melting. Not in twenty-six years had Dagis ever expected to fall in love with a fluffy, fur-depositing animals from Earth within the first few minutes of meeting it, and yet here she was, well and truly enjoying Turing's company, even if he was trying to emotionally manipulate her. It was as the Trill told her to not move that the woman chuckled in response, and as the collie wandered off and decided to make his bed Ruhko's jacket a smirk crossed her face as she looked back at her partner. The Ferengi continued to listen as Jadriel carried on talking, feeling more than content with just sitting with him and listening to what he said. Hearing about how dogs were easy to train and that a lot of them had strong senses of smell was very interesting to her, as despite having lived on Earth for four years during her time at the Academy, she had never gotten the chance to properly learn about most subjects. Her focus had very much so been on joining Starfleet, after all. The woman nodded in agreement to the comment about how not all animals are suitable for starbase living, before laughing at the comment about wandering about with a targ instead of a dog. Her previous smirk soon returned, though, as the man sat beside her (or, well, she was leaning against) said that Turing apparently liked to be pampered, as she looked back at the fluffy fella. x_divider

"Oh really. Well that explains a lot now, doesn't it?" Dagis joked teasingly, before letting out a small chuckle as she idly moved her hand to rest atop Jadriel's own. "I'll admit, I think Turing's already stolen my heart. I never expected to find a dog so lovable within the first five minutes of meeting one, and yet here I am. Frankly, I never expected a dog, or any animal for that matter, to have this much personality. He literally tried to guilt trip me into getting off the couch so he could lay back down on it. If that's not funny I don't know what is." She said, all while idly looking between her partner and the collie across the room. Was this how her life was going to be for the foreseeable? Spending time with her partner and being amused by a very lovable and personality-filled dog? It felt so... Normal, and it was not a norm she had gotten the chance to experienced before. But if it was her new normal she was very, very happy with it.

”I’m sure that every other animal has a personality of their own,” he stated, glancing sideways to Dagis instead of watching Turing. The collie seemed to be content for the time being, using Giles’s own jacket as a pillow. “We probably just don’t notice because we don’t observe them all of the time. Owners would notice what their pets are like, and I’m sure if you watched any wild animal that they’d have some sort of personality, too; they would act in a certain way, or do certain things. In their case, I suppose we don’t notice because they have no interaction with people. It makes you wonder what they would be like if we knew them.” He was delving into the sorts of things that the biologists and animal behaviour researchers studied, when he thought about it. It wasn’t really something that he had ever contemplated before. Growing up he had lived in a busy city environment – not the sort of place where wildlife wanted to go – so it wasn’t something that he had considered. That being said, he did enjoy watching the wildlife; the environmental ring and the butterflies, for example. x_divider

“I don’t know – I think that I’d prefer an animal who had some personality than one that was just… Boring, you know? There wouldn’t be any fun in that. Not that him trying to guilt you into getting off the couch so he can reclaim it again is fun, but – it certainly is cute, I’ll give him that. I am glad that you like him, and I’m glad that you’re okay with him, in general. I’m aware that there are still a handful of people who don’t like the keeping pets sort of thing, and then there are people who don’t think that animals should have any sort of place aboard a Starfleet installation – not even aboard a starbase where there’s space for them, which is silly. So, thank you. …I say this like you weren’t the one who helped to convince me, and like you weren’t the one who asked me to move in, so you already would have known what you were getting into because you were behind both of those things, so...“ Ah, there it was: his amazing ability to ramble in a way that was very merely incoherent. He stopped himself before he could continue on forever. A sheepish grin was given to Dagis there, corners of his eyes crinkling with the smile. Look at this: domesticity! Being here, free of sickbay (for now), sat with Dagis at his side and Turing over there and -- x_divider

-- The more he thought about it, the more he realised how foreign all of this was. It was- It was strange, because it felt familiar in the back of his mind, and if he thought about it hard enough he could even picture this same sort of scene across multiple lives, but… It felt foreign for this lifetime, something that he had never considered. It was something that he had never thought possible. He had never thought that he would get this far: to have this sort of good company, to be happy, to have this sort of peace. And yet here he was: he had it, and despite not knowing how long it would last, he didn’t care. “Thank you,” he then spoke to Dagis, expression having fallen a little and voice lowered to a whisper, very suddenly choked with emotion that he hadn’t realised was so strong. He shook his head then, and laughed - a conscious effort, trying to stop himself from presenting like a wreck that would only concern Dagis. And that wasn't what he wanted, because what they had, what this was, was good. “For – All of this.”

The Ferengi nodded in response to Jadriel saying other animals have their own personalities, and again to him saying that they probably just don't notice, and that wild animals don't interact with people so we wouldn't know because of that as well. It made sense when she thought about it. Animals are like people in so much as they are individuals with personalities and feelings, but if you don't interact with them and be around them you wouldn't notice the differences from one to the next. The woman nodded yet again when the Trill said he'd prefer an animal with personality over one that didn't, a smile sat comfortably on her face as he added that there wouldn't be any fun in that, before grinning ever so slightly as her partner then said that Turing trying to guilt her into getting off the couch wasn't fun but was certainly cute. Dagis' grin turned into a warm smile then as the man next to her said he was glad she liked the collie, and glad that she was okay with him, and it only grew as he thanked her before proceeding to ramble in his usual way. It was as Jadriel's expression fell slightly and he thanked her again in all but a whisper that her smile changed to that of a caring, loving, reassuring one, as she instinctually took his hand fully into her own and began rubbing the back of his with her thumb. As her partner then shook his head, laughed, and added 'for all of this' the woman shifted position so she could better face him, her blue eyes looking into his own as she tried to figure out how to respond without making herself emotional. Reaching across she took his other hand into her own as she sat diagonally on the couch, one of her legs now underneath the other as she finally spoke after what felt like ages but was only a few seconds. "You don't need to thank me for anything, Jadriel, but... You're welcome." Dagis replied softly, her caring smile well and truly remaining on her face. This wasn't a sad moment, this was a happy moment.
16:03
x_divider Her eyes glanced away briefly as she thought of how to continue, before almost immediately looking back into the Trill's own. "I'm going to be honest, I never expected to be able to have... This." She said, vaguely gesturing to both Jadriel and everything around her in general while simultaneously holding both of his hands. "Any of this, but I'm so very happy I get to have it with you. So... Thank you, for all of this." The woman continued warmly, deciding to use his own wording to thank him, before taking a moment to just very simply and silently look into her partner's eyes, only to speak a few moments later. "Plus, you know, Turing is always an added benefit. Who wouldn't want a walking fur dispenser and part time heated blanket in their life?" Dagis joked, a cheeky and playful (and very toothy) grin crossing her face as she glanced over at the dog briefly, before once again looking back into her partner's eyes.

It was just like Dagis to be so kind, so reassuring; and also to typically thank him in return. He laughed, then, looking down as he smiled – his amusement returning in mere moments. When he had first met Dagis he had immediately been suspicious – a COO and the rank of Lieutenant Commander at her age – and he had been right when she had been discovered to be part of Section 31. Well – discovered was a tentative term; he had worked it out and she had revealed the truth herself (in the form of trying to kill him, but he didn’t like to think of that). He had then gone from suspicious to concerned, learning her motivations behind working for the Section, and somehow, concern had grown into fondness and beyond. Over their time together he had learned so much about her that subverted all of the usual traits that you would ascribe to a Section 31 agent. She wasn’t some twisted, unscrupulous individual; she was kind, caring, thoughtful – and despite the progression in their relationship having been so strange, Giles couldn’t help but feel that the odd nature of their experiences had been what brought them so close together. Without the backstory to it all, things might have been incredibly different, and he had no desire for difference at all. x_divider

“Don’t thank me,” he ended up chuckling, giving a slow shake of his head before he looked back to Dagis. Despite the awkward angle with her having taken both of his hands now causing a dull pain up his arm, he made no move to relinquish her grasp. No – this was too nice for that. “I’m the one who’s trying to thank you. I never expected anything like this either. Not – not in this lifetime, at least. I never considered this aspect of life for myself; never wanted it. And yet – it fits. It matches everything that I’ve felt in lives long before my own.” Blink and he could see it; Tiabo and his partner, then Sena and Enori with theirs down the line – all in the same position that they were now, hands entwined. “And it’s funny – because despite how awkward I am with, you know, relationships and the associated talk, this… This is nice. I don’t think I would ask for this any other way. Well. Maybe if it made it easier, I could wish for some miracle that would make it that Turing isn’t so much of a ‘fur-dispenser’.” The joking comment must have been picked up on considering how the collie looked over as if to give a ‘who, me?’ sort of expression. “I’m sure you’ll come to not mind it. I give it a week before you’re hugging him, or using him like a personal fuzzy blanket. I don’t think he would mind, either.” (edited)

It was completely typical of both her and Jadriel to say 'don't thank me' when thanking one-another, and it was because of that typicality that Dagis all but smiled fondly when her partner in turn said the same thing back to her after she had said it only moments ago. The woman's fond smile continued to remain on her face throughout the Trill saying he was the one trying to thank her, that he had never expected to have anything like this (at least not in this lifetime) either, and yet that it fit. And the fondness on the Ferengi's face spread further as the man said how, despite how awkward he was about relationships, this was nice, of which she agreed with whole-heartedly. It was as her partner joked about a miracle making Turing less of a fur-dispenser that she chuckled in response, glancing over at the collie again just in time to see him look over and give that questioning look, her usual toothy grin (mixed with the fondness from a moment ago) returning to her face as she looked back at her partner. x_divider

"I give it five days tops." Dagis replied in both a light-hearted and fond tone. "Although I must admit, I'm more so interested in using him as a blanket than anything else. He seems very cosy." She added with another light chuckle, before rather typically taking a moment to just be silent and think of what to say next. In a way this entire experience was surreal to the woman, but at the same time it also felt so very right, and like she had wanted to experience something like it it for years. As she spoke once again the Ferengi's voice softened, and her fond smile flickered in and out, but her tone still remained the same fond, happy tone as before. "I'll be honest, I don't know if to you I seem confident about all of this relationship stuff, or that I know what I want, - not that I'm not confident about my feelings for you, of course, - but... I have no experience with any of this, and I don't fully know where I want all of this to go, nor do I completely know what I'm comfortable with. I usually dislike not knowing something, but from what I do know about relationships... I think that's all part of it. I think part of being in a relationship with someone is learning more about not just them, but yourself as well." x_divider
17:19
"I might not know everything right now, but I think that might be one of the fun parts? We get to see where this goes and what happens together, and I think the whole point of a relationship is not just to be with someone you love -" She gave Jadriel a gentle hand squeeze at the mention of 'someone you love'. "- But to also have shared experiences with that someone, just like this right now." Dagis said with a glance down towards their entwined hands. "But you probably know that already." She added with a light chuckle, all while looking fondly into her partner's blue eyes. "What I do know I want, though, is everything that already has and currently is happening. I know what my heart tells me to do in the moment, and I try to follow what it says even if I don't have prior experience. Sometimes I don't know if what I do is instinctual, or if I'm subconsciously a really romantic person, or if I just like being affectionate, but I know I've never done something I haven't wanted to do or that I've regretted... At least when it comes to us, anyway." The woman added warmly, giving yet another gentle hand squeeze to the man sat next to her as her fond smile fully returned.

It was in silence, for the most part, that he sat there and allowed Dagis to talk. There was only a slight nod of the head or a smile at certain points. While it was no secret that Giles had a proclivity for rambling, he also knew when to be quiet and do the opposite: just listen. Sometimes you could just tell when a conversation was important enough that you shouldn’t be interjecting, and he got the feeling that this was one of them. It was during Dagis’ speech that he looked away just slightly; not as though he wasn’t listening, but just to make it less awkward. It wasn’t exactly easy to pour your heart out in your own person analysis of your romantic thoughts and feelings – well, Giles didn’t think it was, anyway. The least he could do was make sure that he wasn’t sat there just staring with those ominously glowing eyes boring into Dagis’s soul, and so instead he just looked to the side a little, still catching her smile in the corner of his vision, and he listened. x_divider
21:50
When he thought about it, there was something so intimate about being able to just talk about this sort of thing with one another. How many people suffered through relationships because they just didn’t communicate correctly? How many relationships had fallen apart as a result? People were often too afraid to be open – and yet here they were, with Dagis talking about so much of this almost entirely unprompted. Honestly, it was nice to know that she could express herself in this way; how much emotional suppression had she faced at the hands of Section 31, never getting to simply be herself? It almost felt a little silly to think of it, but he was suddenly struck by just how proud he was of her for that development – and he also found himself suddenly very grateful. Being able to be so open required trust: and if that didn’t highlight just how far the two of them had progressed (and in such a short space of time too,) then he didn’t know what did. x_divider
21:50
“I don’t think you need experience or confidence in the topic of, ehm, relationship-pursuing,” how formal of him, “to know how it should go. Or at least – to be able to steer things in that direction, and have the emotional intelligence to back-track if something’s wrong. I think it’s okay to not know what you want, and you know, sometimes that changes. You might think you want to take one step forward and then realise that that’s not one you want to take; you might think you desire something, try it, and then you don’t want that at all.” When Dagis said ‘you probably know that already,’ she may well have been right; he could hear his own words echoing inside of his head, like he had said them before, once. “And you know – it’s alright to not have any regrets right now, and then it’s alright to think ‘I wish I hadn’t done this’ or ‘I wish I had done something differently’ in the future. But please – if there’s ever a time that you’re uncomfortable with anything - and that can be relationship talk or anything in general – then please, just say. The last thing I would want is for you to feel out of sorts; and I’m certain that should the roles be reversed, then I would always be able to do the same.”

’Relationship-pursuing’. What formal and yet so very typically Jadriel-like wording that was, and it was exactly that wording that caused Dagis’ fond smile and fond feelings to grow. As her partner responded to what she had said the woman nodded occasionally in response, feeling ever so slightly relieved that she was right in that she didn’t need experience or confidence when it came to relationships, and that trial and error along with finding out stuff naturally was seemingly completely normal. She continued to nod in response as the man sat next to her (or, well, half next to her and half in front of her) reassuringly confirmed that it was indeed alright to wish you hadn’t done something, or had done something differently, later. It was very typical that everything the Trill said reassured her despite not having any intentions of trying to be reassured when saying what she had said. It made sense, though, to have what you thought be confirmed and it reassure you before you start doubting yourself. Having not been able to properly be herself for such a long time under the Section’s control it was just nice to her to know she had the right idea, and it was even nicer to have someone in her life who was very simply a reassuring presence. x_divider
00:03
“Of course you would.” The Ferengi confirmed warmly as she idly rubbed her thumbs against her partner’s hands. “I’d never want to make you, or frankly anyone for that matter, feel uncomfortable or do something you wouldn’t want to. I want us both to be comfortable and happy together, and an important part of that is respecting each other’s boundaries. I think that’s an important part of any relationship, be it friendship, romantic, or anything else.” She added, all while continuing to look into her partner’s blue eyes with her own. “We both deserve to feel comfortable around each other, even more so now that we’re living together.“ x_divider
00:03
It was during another content moment of silence that Dagis’ mind slowly wandered to a somewhat related, yet very different conversation subject, of which she quickly decided to bring up, all while still with a content smile on her face as she continued to hold her partner’s hands. “Do you snore, by the way? I don’t know if I do, no one’s ever told me. Thinking about it, I don’t know if the walls between individual rooms in quarters are soundproof enough to block out snoring. I’d never thought about it before. You think they would be, though. I never used to hear anyone snoring back when I was sharing quarters. I’ll have to look that up, because if they aren’t and Starfleet somehow haven’t thought about it for some bizarre reason I know what retrofit I’m getting done as soon as possible.” The Ferengi said with a light-hearted chuckle, her mind half fixed on the thought she just had and half on her partner’s reaction to the question she had just asked, before yet another thought popped quickly into her head to take the last one’s place at the front of her mind. “Would you like a drink, by the way? I know you live here now and could help yourself, but I thought I’d still offer regardless.”

Lieutenant Jadriel Ruhko | SEC BOT 11-Jan-23 05:12 PM
It was while Dagis was talking that he shuffled back to bury himself a little further into the corner of the sofa - he would have disappeared into it if he could, relishing in just how soft it was. Kudos to whichever furniture provider that Starfleet had gone to when designing the interior of the station - or kudos to whoever had come up with the replicator design. Most things were made via industrial replicators now anyway, but he was well aware that there was still a market for hand-crafted products and furniture that had undoubtedly had far more love put into the craftsmanship than there would ever be put into the design of a replicator pattern. It was while casting a gaze over the room (solely with the intention of trying to gauge whether the furniture was hand made or not), he caught sight of Turing idly swishing his tail over the carpet. It seemed the collie had no care for the quality of the furniture. He was content with the floor - or maybe it was just Giles' jacket that he liked. x_divider
17:12
It was funny how the silence didn't seem awkward at all. He was the sort who typically sat there overthinking about how it was awkward and trying to come up with something to say, or debating whether he should say something at all. It was different here, with Dagis. There was none of the same 'this is weird, I should say something' sort feeling; instead it was just pleasant being there in her company. He could feel his eyes becoming more heavy-lidded and definitely could have fallen asleep right there and then, comfortable and content with the warmth from Dagis sat so close -- so when she brought up the subject that she did, it was almost ironic. "I don't know - no one's ever told me, either. I don't think so, though..? I feel like at least one of the medical staff or people I've been in a ward with would have told me over the years," he said, offering a light chuckle. "No thank you to the latter, I'm fine -- but I can tell you that the walls are soundproofed. I've seen the detailing on the schematics... And I think it wouldn't be allowed otherwise, given privacy and all. You're housed with someone you might not even know, so you don't want them overhearing your conversations or getting annoyed at you playing music or uhm.. Hearing anything else that goes on in quarters."

Jadriel both shuffling back into the couch further to get comfier hadn’t gone unnoticed by the Ferengi as she talked, and her feeling of endearment and fondness towards him only grew as a result. She had seen him essentially snuggle into corners on several occasions now, enough to know it was just something he tended to do, but it was strangely endearing to her for some reason completely unbenounced to her. She wasn’t going to question why, though. It was as he changed his position that Dagis did the same, adjusting her her position next to him accordingly so she herself was more comfortable, and still very much so in close proximity to her partner. A chuckle was given in response to the Trill saying someone he’d shared a ward with in the past would’ve probably told him he snored, knowing full well he was right. People always liked to point out snoring for some reason. A nod or two were given in response to the confirmation that the walls were soundproof, but it was as her partner mentioned the ‘anything else’ that went on in quarters that the expression on the woman’s face changed from content and warm to knowing and half amused, all while still light-hearted. If she could raise an eyebrow she would do, that much was certain. x_divider
22:23
“Well, yes, that’s good then, isn’t it?” She replied, her tone light and her mind trying ever so desperately to think of any way to make the subject matter even the slightest bit less awkward, if not for her then for Jadriel. “Frankly, I would assume I would’ve received no end of complaints by now if that wasn’t the case. Snoring, music, anything else, with the different shift times that people have anything preventing them from sleeping would most certainly get on their nerves to say the least.” Dagis said with a slight chuckle, before taking yet another moment to be in simple, content silence, as she leant against the Trill sat next to her. Yes, he was colder than her, but she still felt warmer when doing so. Perhaps it was psychological. “You know, I still haven’t gotten used to the concept of living with someone again, never mind with my partner.” Not that she’s ever lived with a partner before, mind. “I haven’t shared quarters since I became the Chief of Ops however long ago that was.” The woman said in a fairly light-hearted tone, a smile still on her face all while mentally skirting around the circumstances surrounding her promotion and all of the time prior. “I’ve been preparing for this for weeks, doing one thing or another to do with it including getting my- our quarters rearranged, but yet it still hasn’t properly sunk in. I wouldn’t be surprised if I wake up tomorrow and completely forget we share quarters now. But I know one thing is certain: I’ll definitely get used to it.” x_divider
22:23
It was with that being said that the two former Section 31 agents settled in for their first quiet evening together, talking about this, that and the other, all while only occasionally being interrupted by Turing demanding attention. But who could ignore such a cute and fluffy fur-dropper? Dagis certainly couldn’t, and her five day estimate was looking like a stretch. Another first happened that evening, though, as the two shared a meal… Or rather replicated whatever they wanted and ate it at the dining table while continuing to talk about just about anything that came to mind. The collie obviously didn’t go unfed, but he certainly wasn’t allowed anywhere near the Ferengi’s strawberry pudding. Going to bed knowing she shared quarters with her partner now was certainly a strange experience for the woman, but it was most certainly a nice one.
