“I suppose this is where I say goodbye. Can you even hear me?”
Lorin could hear him. But she couldn’t tell him that. She couldn’t move, much less speak.
“You wouldn’t mind if I said your work was mine, right? I helped you research, and you’re going to die anyway. I could finally be promoted after all this bullshit. And it’s not like you did much. You’re here, aren’t you? Anyway. I’m going to my quarters to ride this out. Hey, bright side, maybe how this bullshit works on a hybrid could be different. Your dead body could be a scientific marvel.”
He was cut off by the dead body on the floor- but she was alive, not covered in blood, and very much angry.
“Get the fuck out of Sickbay! You’d really insult a woman who’s already going to die? I swear, fuck off and let me work.”
He had walked out of Sickbay, and Lorin herself had blacked out.
And there she was, back to reality. She turned, seeing him. She looked into his eyes, burning hatred completely and utterly evident. Somehow, she found her voice again. Maybe just to curse this man out.
“I live, bitch. And if you ever dare claim my work as yours, I will hunt you down and engineer a virus for you so you can die like how I should have.”
But before anything else, she shot awake. There were fresh tears on her cheeks. If she had a voice, she would have called for the Computer to turn the lights on. But she didn’t, so she used her PADD. Another Thealin III nightmare. So common, she was afraid to ever fall asleep again. Without fail, her brain tortured her trying to process something it probably shouldn’t. And there were plenty of traumatic things to process. Her brain had a lifetime of things to choose from.
She turned, fell face first onto her pillow, and sobbed. She couldn’t work today, she didn’t want anyone to see her. She didn’t want anyone to know she existed. They could go on with their lives, Lorin could take a day off for the first time.
