Ava was taken aback for a second, eyes widening. “Oh, God,” she whispered, not letting go of his hand. If anything, her grip tightened. She saw the way he struggled with this memory. It was audible in his voice.
“That must be terrible.” She frowned in empathy. For a second, she was unsure what to say. She just needed a moment to process it and here she was, wanting so bad to make him feel better. “I… can’t imagine how hard that must be. I’m honored you trust me enough to say this. I really trust you, too, you know?” She smiled softly. “Please, if I can do anything to make you feel better…” She raised a hand to his cheek and gently cupped his face in an attempt to make him look at her. “…just tell me, please. I want to you to feel okay. And comfortable with this relationship. Whatever you need, just tell me.”
As she said those words, hoping they’d get through to Austin, they also kind of hit herself. ‘Whatever you need’. Yes, she’d do anything. Whatever he needed. The realization was surprising, though it shouldn’t have been.
