The Fishing Pools are a series of medium-sized pools filled with enchanting blue-green water. They are deep enough that an onlooker cannot see the bottom, but silhouettes of creatures swim around, some darting back and forth and others meandering about. The game's objective is to pick up a fishing rod and cast into the pools, enticing a fish to take your bait! When you feel a fish bite your hook, reel it in and if you catch it, you win a prize based on what fish you catch!

Teno had beelined to the fishing pools, noticing their carefully constructed structures almost as soon as he'd walked into the event area. The lights were glistening from the top of the pools' surfaces, radiating beautiful light back into the area. Teno was mesmerized by the water and walked up to the game, considering which pool to fish out of. He almost didn't notice the people around, but at the last moment realized there were two people hanging out nearby. He waved over at Hiammin and Iviaan, and recognition washed over him. It was his secret santa recipient! "Oh, hi!" Teno said excitedly. Looking toward Iviaan he saw that the man had a few prizes in his lap. "It looks like you caught a fish already, huh? I haven't decided which pool to fish from yet... they're all so mesmerizing!"

"Well, if it helps, they all have the same fish. It just lets multiple people play at once," Iviaan answered, fingers flying across the holographic keyboard. "This is an Andorian Glass Squid." The squid in question was maybe as long as Iviaan's torso. Big squid plushie. "It's very cute."

"Oh, okay, yeah that does help. I suppose just one that feels the best maybe, then?" He hummed, looking at the pools and then back at Iviaan. "Oh wow, that is a pretty squid! What are you going to name them?" Teno's voice was curious. The squid looked soft and pretty and had very long tentacles! "It IS very cute."

“Oh, oh no pressure of course!” Teno said quickly, trying to ease Iviaan’s discomfort and distress. “I name all my stuffies after what they are,” he said with an embarrassed chuckle. “My Hara cat stuffy is Cat and my Terran bear stuffy is Bear and…” he trailed off, hoping that made sense to Iviaan.

Iviaan smiled sheepishly, squeezing the little squid tighter. "My pet mice are named after... truly ancient books. Darcy, Victor, Sherlock, and Jekyll," he quoted, putting a finger up for each. "I'll probably come up with a name later. I'm a little too nervous to think at the moment."

Kakabam was here ready to fish! He loved fishing back on T'Shen colony and was eager to see how it worked here. As they stepped into the fishing pools area they rolled up their sleeves as they assumed this fishing would be like what they did on their colony. The water was deep but the silhouettes of fish could be seen which is why Kakabam assumed this was going to be a hand fishing experience. They only saw one familiar face, Teno. The others they were not acquainted with but they gave a polite bow in greeting to them too. The also saw that everyone seemed to be using fishing rods. Not Kakabam's first idea but they took a rod and casted their line. 🎲66

The plushie was cute, Kakabam wanted to keep it for themself, but they knew they couldn't have any toy in their quarters without their son getting to it. Well, maybe this would be a good time for Riki to learn how to treat the belongings of others. Their tone also did not reflect their excitement, but they were actually very enthused with how they did! "I got a plushie, a mug, stickers, and a button," Kakabam still had the colour changing aquarium mug in their hands when they said this and they held it up. They noticed the other was Aenar so there was a chance they would not be able to perceive the object Kakabam was holding in their hands so they added, "It seems to be a standard size with colour changing properties, perhaps depending on heat? I am not sure actually, I have never owned one of these. What about you? What did you catch?" (edited)

Making her way into the amazingly underwater themed winter ball, eyeing every little decoration and bit of sea life, real or holographic, Elwyn quickly stumbled across what looked like... A game? A game to play? A game to play at the winter ball that was themed appropriately? Oh heck yeah, best winter ball ever! Grinning, she went and got herself one of the fishing rods to play the game with and wandered over to one of the pools. Casting her line into the pool, she waited to see if she'd get a nibble, remaining quite still so as to not spook the fishies... 🎲38

Similar to Elwyn, Eicran had been wandering in awe while taking in the setting. He had so many questions - the majority of which revolved around the topic of 'how did the Operations people have the imagination and creative design to come up with all of this.' That question mentally repeated when he stumbled across this game. Was there anything these people hadn't thought of? For a minute he milled around between the pools, watching people play the fishing game. He wanted to try his hand at it (instead of wandering and probably looking a bit lost,) but he had never fished before, not even on the holodeck. He wouldn't know where to start... But there was one way to learn: observing someone else. He watched as Elwyn pretty much immediately managed to... Fish a fish? Was that the term? Her technique was clearly worth copying.

Ooooooh! Clownfish! The funniest fish! Letting out a happy little noise her writer couldn't figure out how to describe beyond 'eeeee', Elwyn let the fish go after looking at it for a moment and collected her prizes happily. A sticker?! A mug?! Best. Winter. Ball. Ever! Staring at the colour changing mug for a moment, she soon noticed someone who had been observing her. Giving the man a friendly smile and a wave she wandered over to him, looking up at him with her prizes and rod in her hand. "Hi! I'm Elwyn! Enjoying the ball?"

The man's intentions hadn't been to disturb this person performing the fishing game, but she didn't seem annoyed at the fact he was watching. Instead, she waved - and Eicran gave an awkward half-smile and half-wave back. "I'm Eicran," he introduced back - actually doing an introduction instead of forgetting to tell the other person his name. "I am - it's all very impressive! I was just thinking about how much work must have gone into designing everything." It was then that Konstantin arrived and, with the same ease as Elwyn, caught a fish. Eicran looked back and forth between the two people. Time for a question that might be a little cheeky, but hey: he had ended up talking to someone, so he might as well make use of that! "...Do either of you fancy teaching me how to do that? I've never held a fishing rod before, never mind, you know -- fished a fish. Is it difficult?"

Konstantin laughed a little at having caught the oyster out of all things, he threw it back into the fishing pool of course and took his prize in excitement, he was eager to fish some more. Konstantin used to fish with his adoptive father a lot when they went camping and hiking back in the day, it was a lot of fun. He turned to Eicran with an enthusiastic smile, he was quite excited about teaching someone how to fish. "Sure, no problem! So you pick up the rod, hold it like this with two hands.. then you hold the line swish it over the water, let go of the line and reel it in with this spinner. Or if you use a different lure you can just wait for the bob to go down which means you've caught something then reel it back. I hope that makes sense!" He said quite quickly with a nervous smile and his usual excitement, he explained it just like his adoptive father had which made sense to him but might not have made much sense to others if not shown physically how to do it. "I am Konstantin by the way, pleasure to meet you..?"

After setting the 'fish' free (it was only a 'fish' right? A hologram? Kakabam remembered hearing that the two terms had slightly different meanings but did not recall which ones were which. It was obvious that Kakabam was no marine biologist or any sort of natural science minded. "I am fine. I caught a Bajoran shrimp earlier and got a plushie of it as well," Kakabam's little shoulder bag was now full of gifts to bring back to his son. "And now I have two plushies. I plan to present both to Riki and let him pick which one to have," Kakabam gave the squid a little squeeze. "You look nice tonight. I like the gloves and... the seaweed look. it is very you. "Oh, a Bajoran Shrimp! I love them and all their little legs. They look funny when they swim, and they're quite fast. Kind of hard to catch, to be honest." He chuckled a little and put his stickers in his hand with his mug, then held out his right hand and flexed his fingers. The silky glove shined in the light and when Teno moved his arm some very deep green glitter in the fabric of his shirt glimmered. "Thank you, Kakabam. You look magnificient in your outfit too! They watched as Teno moved his arm to show off the green glitter. To Kakabam, green was a very bold colour since it was the colour of blood. "And thank you," Kakabam lifted their hand up to touch the brown horns that seemed to blend in with their naturally brown hair. "I decided to dress up as a Kakabam'in'hhui. It is a type of Vulcan and Romulan fish that shares my namesake. It is known for swimming up stream in large groups. There is a legend involving a waterfall and a school of Kakabam'in'hhui. "Oh wow, a crab!" Teno gently released the crab from the fishing hook, rubbing a thumb across the shell. "Interestingly textured. This guy is so neat!" He chuckled and walked back to the edge of the pool and carefully put the crab back in the water, watching as it sank and then scuttled away to go do crabby things. "Nice," he said upon receiving his prizes, thanking the volunteer who gave them to him and turning back to the two he'd been speaking with. He held up the plushie to Kakabam and Iviaan, smiling from ear to ear. "Now I have one too," he said with a laugh, sticking the stickers and mug in one of his pockets and the plushie under his arm. "Shall we go find something to eat?" He said to the two of them, inviting Iviaan to join them if he wanted.

"Okay, sure!" Teno said, glancing back and forth between Iviaan and Kakabam. "Maybe we'll see each other around?" He gave Iviaan a smile and then turned to Kakabam. "Okay, let's go!" And he turned and strode toward the #buffet !

Kakabam watched Teno carch the crab and clapped softly to cheer for him. "And thank you, I do like my name. I know it sounds rather odd in many other languages," Even within Vulcan space, a lot of people assumed his name was non-Vulcanoid or from a far off place. It wasn't uncommon for people to have names from other parts of the galaxy after all. But Kakabam's name was very much Romulan in origin, it was chosen by his father who also gave his sibling 'Jinsol' their name. "Hopefully we will see each other around," Kakabam said to the kind person who won the glass squid earlier. "Yes, let us investigate the food." Kakabam nodded and followed Teno towards the buffet area.

After having caught the squid and won his prizes he laid down the fishing rod thinking that was enough for this time. Next time he was going fishing he was going to eat the fish and not just throw it back in, but that was for when he was going camping on shore leave. "Well that's enough for me for today! I'll be heading to the ballroom and have some fun. See you both some other time." He said enthusiastically with the same kind smile he always wore on his face, he waved the two goodbye before leaving for the ballroom and if he was lucky maybe get a dance in before this all ended.

The pools were quieter now, and Iviaan was shameful to admit he sighed with a little bit of relief, shoulders relaxing. This definitely isn't his scene, and he is, unfortunately, more than aware of the fact. He took off the suit jacket for the time being, draping it on the back of his hoverchair and going for a fishing rod. Why not? In it went..! 🎲51 (edited)

Iviaan blinked, tracing the shape of the small plushie in his arms, and realized he had made a Mistake. Oh well. Two squid plushies. Mother and child....... Unless? "Does anyone want to trade for a baby squid?" The text-to-speech rang out to those remaining.

Uncertain where to go, Evoras ended up wandering in the direction of the fishing pools and silently observed what was going on, before deciding there really was no reason not to try. In fact she knew at least two people that would be elated if she sent them a sea creature themed gift. She took a fishing rod and raised an eyebrow as she inspected it, before casting it into the pool. 🎲57

After picking up the crab plushie she approached Iviaan. She really did not care what animal she had which made trading a logical action. "I am able to offer this..." Evoras turned the crab over in her hands inspecting it from all sides, she had no idea what kind of animal it was exactly. "... crab? If you would be interested in it."

"There is no need for thanks. I plan to gift this to a friend's child. They will certainly be intrigued by this squid." She held it up slightly and inspected the glass squid. "The crab looks like it its kind is rather resilient and like it would be hard to detect if it were sitting on top of the right kind of stone."

"Is this shit - I think this is taller than Saren, right? Maybe around Renakir's - wait, I think it's as tall as you, maybe, can you stand up-" he closed his mouth when he remembered Thalass's predicament. "We'll check later." "The Denobulan Green-finned Purple Carp is purple with green fins." No shit. "More interesting, however, is the Vulcan brinedweller. They are almost entirely chemosynthetic beings, which is to say they get most of their nutrients by processing chemical energy to produce sugars. Essentially, they rarely need to eat - and even when they do, they eat the specific types of tube worms, clams, mussels that eat chemosynthetic bacteria, so in a sense, it's all chemosynthesis all the way down."

"Ohh." Duh. He was listened intently to Thalass, hardly paying attention to the own fish he caught - instead, he'd set the mug down next to the other one, figuring he'd give one of them to Mo - well, both of them would be in their quarters, really, but still, it was the principle that mattered. It was really interesting information, and he was nodding along, but... "That's... sooo, like, they just need the chemicals? Not anything else, but isn't it - isn't everything chemicals..?" He hardly understood it but he really wanted to know! It was always fun to listen to people talk about things they knew a lot about, after all. It was only then that he looked down at his sticker and realized what fish he'd caught. "Yooo, a bass? I'mma slap this somewhere cool for sure. Just like a real bass." Said like the bass guitar 'bass'.

"No, it's -" and then they launched into an explanation of what chemosynthesis actually is. Not the short version, either. Allan was getting the whole TED talk. Consequently, I've decided I'm not writing allat. Google is free. " - So you can see why a creature that almost exclusively inhabits brine pools, which have almost no oxygen but do have high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and methane, would develop that way." Allan listened to the whole TED talk - this was interesting stuff! He actually at some point sat down beside them, folding his long dress underneath him as he did, arranging his little mugs and sticker sheets in a neat little pile beside him as he leaned one elbow against the edge of the pool. "Ahhh, okay, gotcha, yeah-" he looked over and down at the pool again for some reason, and then back at Thalass, "kinda badass, really, of them to do."
